The western from the mouth of the Niagara River to Whitby is a world class place to catch trophy Chinook Salmon. It isn’t strange for anglers to catch 25-30 lb fish in this area. also to Chinook salmon, the lake also features Coho Salmon, Lake Trout, Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout Steelhead, Carp and Bass. The lake has a maximum depth of 244 m, and average depth of 86 m. Prime fishing times are from late May till late October. Check fishing rules for what is in season. There are some places where you may be able to fish from the shoreline along Lake Ontario as well as LaSalle Park Marina and the Canal at the Lift bridge. (tourismburlington.com)

Heading back to the parking lot, we took a trail that had clearly been used by somebody on a horse. Horseshoes imprinted in the mud and the inevitable horse poop were obviously seen on the muddy trail. I do not think horseback riding is really allowable on Mountsberg Conservation Area lands, however this shows that you have to generally glance down to be sure you do not step in something smelly. Only 13 minutes away lies Crawford Lake Conservation Area, a beautiful place to use up an afternoon exploring and learning about one of the 120 known meromictic lakes on earth. This means the water is so stable that the sediments that gather on the bottom offer well-preserved records of aquatic and plant life from the region. At Crawford Lake you’ll also find a reconstructed Iroquoian Village from the 15th century. This Conservation Halton park is open all year round, offering guests 19 km of wildlife looking at, hiking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails with connections to the Bruce Trail. The Robert Edmondson Conservation Area is a brand new addition to the parks and conservation regions in the Burlington area. This calm park, featuring a trail that winds through wetlands and woods, is previously called the Burns Conservation Area, however was renamed in honour of Robert Edmondson’s almost four decades of devoted service to the Halton Watershed and Niagara Escarpment. Hike, fish and bring your picnic lunch. (burlingtonlifestyle.com)
At Christie Lake, campers are able to go swimming in a sectioned off part of the lake. Because the swimming area is small and the whole camp is in such a small area the whole day, campers don’t have to swim as a small group. Rather, the whole camp goes swimming together in a ‘big pool’, and our staff is generally in the deepest. Campers have the choice of going on a short canoe trip with two KidQuest staff to a ‘bubble gum’ tree the tree smells like bubble gum . there’s generally a camp staff in the front and the back of the canoe, and two campers sit in the center. All campers and staff wear life jackets. (kidquestcamp.ca)
Exploring the enchanted forests of Hilton Falls is a natural treat with great hiking, biking and cross-country ski trails. The blazing colours of fall are only surpassed by the beauty of fleeting spring wildflowers or the richness of the green summer landscape. The looking at station at the falls allows you to drink in the inherent beauty of a 10 metre waterfall that cascades over the Niagara Escarpment and the unexplained mill ruins that surround it. The Welland River, ON was stocked with walleye for some years and anglers are enjoying the results. On the way to Merrit Island today we spotted a couple of anglers fishing off the Aquaduct where the Welland River goes under the Welland Recreational Canal, and we stopped to talk to the anglers. Jeff Munroe was kind enough to show-off the nice-size walleye he caught fishing right from shore. As we talked, another nice bass took his minnow and as he was fighting it we could obviously see another bass trying to get the same bait. The nice thing about fishing the Aquaduct is that there are so many baitfish that you may catch your bait by just using a minnow dip-net and than fishing right off the bridge.
