As our and the wind picked up, Captain Mike started the big inboard engines of the LAZYBONES and began heading back to the harbor. I sat up in the wheelhouse with the captain as he pointed out landmarks and told their stories. He came to Montauk in 1970 in search of good surf and soon discovered the excitement and fun of working on a charter ship. He recalled walking along the docks one morning and hearing an old fisherman yell to him, Hey kid, get over here, you re goin fishin ! Mike hopped aboard and was doing it since. Over the seventeen years LAZYBONES was in business he s worked on a motto, Bring your lunch, catch your dinner, which looks to apply to anybody who fishes from his ship. (montauksportfishing.com)
The ship caught about fifty big blues in the 1st hour and after the second hour, we all were doing the catch and release because we had so many fish each. The ship must have caught about 200 blues. We followed the churning water and Seagulls just off the coast of the lighthouse and for the 1st time ever I learned what people meant when they said that as early as they dropped their line a fish was on. I caught 18 big blues, yes 18 and my son caught 8. What an amazing time. The crew were useful and we had enjoyable time. The stripers were scarce but the amount of Blue fish and the fight they put up was well worth the trip. (en.yelp.com.hk)
Over at Fisherman’s World I spoke to Jeremy this week and he said that there’s still a pretty good herring bite taking place in the Harbor. The fish are showing a slight preference for smaller Sabiki rigs he suggested size 6 hooks for your best shot. Otherwise the striper bite in the Housy is still a viable choice but the bite is tough. The fish are schooled up in the deeper water as projected in February an this is when they begin to get a sever case of lock-jaw. On occasion a warm snap like the one predicted for this week can trigger them into feeding so this may be a good call if you are wanting to wet a line in the next few days. (thefisherman.com)

Has grown over the years, expanding to three places, as well as Montauk. Captain and owner Paul Forsberg had his 1st ship in Montauk when he was just 12 years old. He runs the three places with his son and two grandsons, all of whom seemingly have fishing in their blood. The prices are great, starting at $50 for a half day and going up, based on length and distance of the trip. You can not get more experienced than these guys, and the success they have had over the last 80 years speaks for itself. (deliciouscatch.com)
The winds of change have blown through the region. Recent changes now classify New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut anglers as all being in the same region, with the same limitations. New Yorkers will have fewer days of fluking with their season cut from 151 days to 128 days. For recreational anglers, there s going to be more fluke dinners. For charter and party ship captains there s going to be less charters and fares. I have the utmost respect for anybody that earns a living on the water. While there s no perfect solution to any of the many issues facing our current day fisheries, I do believe the regional approach will work. (blog.fishidy.com)
