Millers Ferry Crappie Fishing Reports

Neely Henry both great crappie lakes, said Mike Holley, biologist with the Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries in Eastaboga. An angler pulled a 17-inch, 3-pound black crappie from Neely Henry in 2012. Logan Martin seemed to be improving for crappie numbers throughout the last several years. Both Neely Henry and Weiss have had average year-classes of crappie the past two years after a boom year-class was made in both lakes in 2010. Numbers can be down a little at both lakes, however fish from the 2010 year-class should supply some big crappie for anglers this year. (gameandfishmag.com)

Millers Ferry Reservoir is a regionally important reservoir in southwest Alabama that gives excellent fishing opportunities. Both largemouth bass and spotted bass are considered excellent in this reservoir. This reservoir steadily produces bass of three pounds or bigger. This is due in part to high fertility and a comparatively stable threadfin shad population. The largemouth bass are found mainly in the backwater regions like Alligator Slough, Houseboat Slough, Pine Barren Cree, Gee’s Bend and Foster Creek. While spotted bass are found more usually in the major river regions, look for deep points and bluff walls for good places for spotted bass fishing. (outdooralabama.com)

Over 300 three o clock weigh-in. Over $4000 in cash and prizes were given over the next hour. Jonathan Mitchell s 1. 99-pound crappie won the $1000 great prize. Mitchell fished a tube-jig along steep banks to bag his prize. Junior angler, Nick Hudson took the top youth fish prize of $250. This was certainly not one of the most nice events that was held with strong current, muddy water and heavy rains predicted with highs only in the 40’s and low 50’s. The less than nice conditions left some anglers on the dock and some braving the condition to prove their true competitive spirit. Many teams credited Stubby Steve’s product for helping catch fish, most likely caused by muddy water conditions. Millers Ferry Lake is one of the best crappie fishing places in southern Alabama, proclaimed Dave Armstrong, an Alabama Division Wildlife & Freshwater Fisheries biologist. The lake usually produces good numbers per angler trip. In surveys we ve done, about 15 of the crappie we gather in Millers Ferry Lake are 12 inches long or longer with some in the 15- to 16-inch range. William said, call I was at Loftin s Bait Shop in Camden verifying a double-tagged fish from last year s event. Jeff Howard from Birmingham had caught the $10, 000 fish from last year s Derby. Unfortunately he was a year late for the big money but he did gather $100. When Mr. Lister portrayed two red tags in his fish, I knew it was one from this year s Derby. Not till I got to the Marina and confirmed the tag numbers on the fish did I know for sure that they had the $25, 000 fish. Contra Costa Water District has refilled the lake.   All the docks are now open.   The water is still muddy and fishing was slow. Fish for trout on the East Side, Channel Point or from a ship with Power Bait, mice tails or nightcrawlers, or attempt for catfish at Channel Point, Loma Island or from a ship with nightcrawlers or chicken liver. Black Bass have been biting with fake baits/lures or nightcrawlers anywhere around the lake.   Crappie and bluegills are biting on jigs or worms at the ship Ramp area, Loma Island or the Channel Point area. Slow-roll a spinnerbait and work a rattle bait across the point as your ship moves up the channel. The channel is the highway the bass follow, and they’ll chase shad up on the point. Also, cover the bottom with a Carolina-rigged watermelon red or redbug Trick Worm above a 3/4-oz. Sinker. Wayne says he religiously dips the tails of his worms in JJ s magic, and he feels it makes all the difference in bites. Current coming down the river really helps here and on other ledges and points.
