I waded the Kankakee over the weekend. River is low and clear. Due to grass and moss, you’re really restricted to the number of baits you may be able to throw. The top water bite for smallmouth was on fire throughout the morning hours. Baits without rattles made best due to clear water. Working the baits along current seams were key. Once the top water bite ended, minnow imitating plastics on 1/0 keeper hooks worked gradually made some more bass. Here are some of the average bass being caught. (chicago.suntimes.com)
Cook County lakes are open to ice fishing now. As lake ice conditions are checked and ice fishing is allowed, 976-HOOK will post them, we’ll cover them in this report and update you Thursday night on CLTV Great Outdoor Sports Page. Some lakes have open water and no lakes have enough minimum ice four inches to be opened for ice fishing. It may take some weeks before safe ice is made. Des Plaines River has shore line ice that’s making access hard for those few anglers trying to fish the river. (articles.chicagotribune.com)
I received a email from DNR Warden John Scheiber last week stating that the DNR was going to start to net the lake. They set out 10 nets on the lake from the North end to the South end and started their count. Don Weggen and I were at the South landing yesterday Saturday and watched them count fish out of a couple of the nets. The guys from the DNR were pulling the last three nets Saturday morning, and were going to shock the lake last night Saturday . We understand they shocked up into Otter Creek also. We saw some really nice fish and the guys said that the fish in the lake are in really good form. (otterlakeboosters.com)
The Ice Age National Scenic Trail is a thousand-mile footpath completely inside Wisconsin that highlights these Ice Age landscape features while giving access to some of the state’s most beautiful natural regions. The trail is on private, USFS and county forest land with many trailheads during the county. More than 12, 000 years ago, an great flow of glacial ice sculpted a landscape of extraordinary beauty across Wisconsin. As the colossal glacier retreated, it left behind a range of distinctive landscape features. These Ice Age remnants are now considered among the world’s finest examples of how continental glaciation sculpts our planet. (riblakewisconsin.com)
The most of keeping-sized walleyes are coming from 15 to 23 feet of water throughout the day and 15 to 17 feet throughout the evening hours on Leech Lake. A jig and shiner minnow is the best bet in Walker Bay, Agency Bay and the north side of Minnesota Island. Look to Portage Bay in 15 to 20 feet of water for bigger walleyes. Garfield Lake has provided steady walleye action also. The best crappie reports are coming from Miller’s Bay and Shingobee Bay on Leech in six to 15 feet of water. (postbulletin.com)
, this 20-acre park holds one of Wisconsin’s last stands of majestic old growth timber, as well as yellow birch, hemlock, red oak and towering white pine. There’s an interpretive three-quarter-mile trail that winds through the county-owned forest with large-diameter trees more than two centuries old. Take a walk through history as you get a close-up look at a forest that was around long before Wisconsin became a state. (travelwisconsin.com)
Professional angler and guide, Daryl Christensen 608-296-3068, from Montello says that the best fall places are in the Fox River area and the whole west end where the Fox River enters the lake. The reason why this is a top place is because the shad forage base moves into the river to spawn. Fish any green weeds with spinnerbaits and crankbaits in white, black, and orange colors. Christensen said to follow the scattered weed edges along the west shoreline when casting. Daryl also said that the big fish that you see in the weeds aren’t carp, however big pike. Big spoons casted and quickly retrieved catch pike and the odd muskie. (host.madison.com)
With the mortalities, this was a useful study to both our DNR staff and to the general fishing public. Anglers are interested in how fish move during the system and will look to apply these results to their fishing practices in years ahead. Results that could best translate to more fish in the ship could be to know where fish are throughout different periods of the year. Granted the timing of movements will be variable from year to year based on weather trends, however there are general trends. As an example, adult fish are concentrated in the rivers through late April early May before entering the Upriver Lakes, meaning the rivers could be the best place to fish early open water.
