Anglers in and around the area can take benefit of a service offered by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. A paddlefish cleaning station was setup and workers at the center salvage the eggs from the female paddlefish to sell as caviar. In 2008, more than 8, 000 lbs. Of eggs were salvaged and the caviar was dispersed during Europe and Asia. More than 45 tons of paddlefish carcasses were recycled into a natural supply of heating oil. The cleaning station is set up some months north of Twin Bridges State Park on Hwy 137. Anglers that are fishing at Riverview Park in Miami can call the center to come pick up their paddlefish for processing. (visitmiamiok.com)
Any paddlefish legally caught and kept by anglers must be now tagged with the angler’s paddlefish permit number. One way is with the use of grey channel tape and a permanent marker. Wrap channel tape around the bill some number of times and write the complete paddlefish permit number on the tape legibly with permanent marker. If one group is bringing many fish to the PRC, it also helps to have the angler’s name written on the tag. (wildlifedepartment.com)
After years of data collection and consideration of many alternatives, Wildlife Department biologists have finished that an individual yearly harvest bound is the best solution for long-term harvest management in Oklahoma. Luckily, a most of anglers won’t be influenced by this restriction, as 83 of paddlefish anglers keep two or fewer fish per year. The main objectives are to conserve the resource and decrease total harvest while preserving opportunity for as many anglers as possible. Catch-and-release fishing for paddlefish remains available statewide, year-round with few limitations. (eregulations.com)
The proceeds from sales of Oklahoma paddlefish caviar were used as an alternative supply of earning for the Paddlefish Research Center. The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation funnels the money into continuing paddlefish research, and also uses the money to help finance projects like improved fishing and boating access regions on Oklahoma’s lakes and rivers, paddlefish management, angler education and more. By regulating the state sale of roe, the Paddlefish Research Center is effectively decreasing poaching, which assures the species’ conservation for future generations. (travelok.com)
Fishermen and fisherwoman get your gear prepared and head to the Northeast part of Oklahoma to partake in the spoonbill fishing extravaganza! Anglers line “elbow to elbow” every season along the banks of the Neosho River to snag a prehistoric prize called Paddlefish or Spoonbill by the locals . In their early spawning run, the Spoonbill may be caught by snagging with a stout surf rod. Paddlefish feed on plankton and won’t bite a hook with bait. Anglers must use a heavy test line and a big barbless treble hook. (examiner.com)
We focused our attention on fishing the shad carpet looking at our sonar. At the edges of the shad carpet in the river channels we could find blue catfish feeding. Using our Navionics lake maps and sonar on our Lowrance HDS 12, we could see little yellow blunt arches that we interpret as blue catfish hanging on the edges of the channels gorging on shad. Blue catfish use the edges of channels to trap their food. I like to think about it as if we were playing tag in a racquetball court. The tagger could use the wall as a way to corner the opponent and tag them. Catfish, well fish overall, use ledges and drop offs much the same way to catch their food. (grandfishingreport.com)

The state center in Miami, four miles north of the Twin Bridges over the Neosho and Spring rivers, offers the free processing service in a trade-off for info needed for paddlefish population analysis. In 2014, the center cleaned 2, 405 fish. GLOBE ROGER NOMER$. (joplinglobe.com)
– The crappie are biting great now, as conditions are becoming prime for the spawn. The crappie are starting to stage around the docks preparing for the spawn. The fish are biting at different times on different parts of the lake, so go when you may be able to and hope its at the right time. The depth was rather occasional, with the fish biting 4 feet one day and 18 feet the next. The crappie are moving lots now so make sure to attempt at all depths at your beloved slab spot. Minnows or jigs are working well, so make sure to give them both a attempt. There have not been any reports of any crappie being caught up on the banks, however it will not be long.
