Anglers in and around the area can take benefit of a service offered by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. A paddlefish cleaning station was setup and workers at the center salvage the eggs from the female paddlefish to sell as caviar. In 2008, more than 8, 000 lbs. Any paddlefish legally caught and kept by anglers must be now tagged with the angler’s paddlefish permit number. One way is with the use of grey channel tape and a permanent marker. We focused our attention on fishing the shad carpet looking at our sonar. At the edges of the shad carpet in the river channels we could find blue catfish feeding. Using our Navionics lake maps and sonar on our Lowrance HDS 12, we could see little yellow blunt arches that we interpret as blue catfish hanging on the edges of the channels gorging on shad. Blue catfish use the edges of channels to trap their food. I like to think about it as if we were playing tag in a racquetball court. Paddlefish Research Center worker Kendall Robbins last week begins the steps that will lead to packaged fillets for a lucky angler.
