"The major subject of the meeting was to take a position on the return of the Ceitus Boatlift, or another barrier that could restrict the flow of new water from Cape Coral into the Matlacha Pass. The people of Matlacha have saw the change of water quality and reduced marine life 1st-hand in our own canals and bays right behind our homes, " Stoelker said. "We have seen the extra sand and fill on Shoreline Drive continue to gather. We have seen big changes to our water quality over the past two years and the only thing that’s different is the elimination of the lift. We do not think this is the only answer to ensure the best possible water quality, however it’s a start. (snookfoundation.org)
They aren t catching as many fish as they used to, although, said Leoma Lovegrove. Some environmental groups blame adjoining Cape Coral. Worked on in the late 1950s by Gulf American Corp, Cape Coral has 400 miles of manmade canals, more than any city in the world, and for decades, its waters were separated from the Matlacha Pass Aquatic Preserve by a lock called the Ceitus Barrier. Boaters from the west side of Cape Coral negotiated the lock to reach open water. (realestate.heraldtribune.com)
