Lower Saluda River Striper Fishing

Another interesting Striper in the Saluda is how you must fish for them. Nearly the only way to do it’s out of a kayak. I personally think that this adds a whole new level of fun to the fight. Kayaks are more stealthier than conventional boats. You may be right over the fish, while they don t have clue that you’re ever there. The best part of kayak fishing in the Saluda is when you hook up with a big one. You better hold on tight, because this fish is going to take you for the ride of your life. (camkrese.wordpress.com)

One big difference between Lake Hartwell and Lake Thurmond is that considerable stands of timber were exceeded off but not cleared when Hartwell was impounded in 1952. Stripers hang in the tops of those trees and will come up just far enough to grab baits. Big fish head straight back toward the timber when they’re hooked, and many giants end up escaping that way. Nymphs will the year. Bead-head nymphs in most patterns work well, as long as they’re fished near the bottom. Adding something flashy to any standard nyRmph pattern will result in more strikes. A brace of nymphs fished through some of the deeper pools may be lethal throughout the winter and spring, however the same fish will move into the shoals and broken pocket water where there’s more dissolved oxygen in the water throughout the late summer and fall. It is a heck of a story. To understand it, the 1st thing you have to know is this: the Santee-Cooper lakes are one of only about a half-dozen freshwater impoundments in the country in which striped bass can reproduce naturally, thanks to the length of their two tributaries – fifty miles of Congaree and seventy miles of Wateree rivers, both unimpeded till above the Fall Line. That unobstructed run of rocky, free-flowing current is crucial, because once a female striper transmits her million or so eggs into the river, it keeps them suspended in the water column long enough to hatch. I was surprised, when just after some minutes, Tommy emerged from the behind of the island with a 13 brown trout. It turns out that fishing the lesser flow on the behind of the island was a pretty smart idea. Afterwards, we each had a small trout on in the rapids on the major side of the island, only to get off, while Tommy also caught a small trout in the rapids. By then, it was time to paddle like mad to the takeout point at Radio Lane, as chosen by a red and white sign. We continued up the Saluda, passed under a big power line and began exploring a part of Lake Murray that really feels like a different fishery than the lower end. Water visibility was nil, although that’s at least partially the result of more than 4 inches of rain soaking the region over the last week. We idled over shallow flats, photographed some number of miles of shoreline and island timber fields yes, a flipping stick could have been useful, and sooner or later came to a far upriver ship access where the lake narrowed into a classic Southern river. Catfish: just to good. Attempt drifting cut white perch or cut shad on the bottom in or near the major channel. Largemouth Bass: Slow to just. Up and down air temperatures have kept a strong winter bite from turning on, and for now the fishing is still pretty tough. Schools of bait are to get bigger and tighter, however fish aren’t still ganged up with them. Fish can still be caught on Rattle Trap-type baits, square billed crankbaits, and Alabama rigs. The grub bite should get good once water temperatures drop on, and as shad begin to die off when water temperatures hit about 50 degrees the jerkbait bite will get better and better. I fished with Ron Weber on Monday up toward Shriver Creek. Ron caught about seven bass on a Buckeye Lures spinnerbait equipped with double gold Colorado blades and a chartreuse and white skirt. We fished along the grass hydrilla and inside pockets in the grass. Ron would not back the spinnerbait. I went out with Forrest Roberts of Aiken on Lake Murray on Tuesday. We fished around Holly Creek and caught and released about 22 stripers, of which 10 were over the 22-inch minimum size bound. We had one about 24 inches or about 7 or 8 pounds and all were caught on Lucky Craft Bevy Shad crank baits in six inches of water. (chronicle.augusta.com)
