By thousands of spawning Steelhead. If you aren’t a migratory fisherman not to worry. But think about this is one of the best times to clean up on big trout. You see our trout grow to exponential size hanging out behind the spawning fish gorging on eggs four months out of the year. Prolific hatches and night time fishing produce life time achiever trout. If your not a night time fisherman the terrestrial hatches in July and August can create some great fishing while you work on your tan wet wading. We have lodging available near the river. The river bottom for most of its length is made up of sand, gravel, silt, and small stones. Fallen logs, undercut banks, sharp bends, deep runs, and black pools all create good holding cover for both steelhead and trout. Quality hatches of mayflies, caddis, and stoneflies make for excellent dry fly fishing for inhabitant trout. The diverse water below Irons creates excellent habitat for the steelhead that make their journey up this river yearly. (flyfishingconnection.com)
The river is small in comparison to the standard river in northern Michigan and clear. This makes stealth the most important fishing tool. The big salmon and trout are found in the many log jams that may be found at about every turn in the river. The key is patience and stealth. If you see the fish swimming, it most probably has already seen you. There are many big fish to be caught all summer long, however the salmon may be difficult to land with the many log jams I mentioned. When hooked, the big kings will now head for the cover, peeling line off your reel. If you are experienced enough at the fight, you may be able to pull in a pretty fish for a small stream. It was a marriage of my passions for the outdoors and the internet. In late 1999 we started our 1st message board. After going through 3 different message board softwares, we settled on one in late 2000. Photo galleries, classifieds, product reviews were added in afterward years. It was a social network before the term was coined. Users have self organized get togethers and many have made long lived friendships with others who share the same interests in the outdoors through the site. (michigan-sportsman.com)

There are opportunities to get into these fish earlier in some of the smaller rivers like the Little Manistee and Betsie. The early run King Salmon may not be as many at times but when you hook into one they’re some real tackle busting brutes. They can snap premium lures in half and break heavy lines with ease. The peak time for the King Salmon in the Pere Marquette, Big Manistee, and Muskegon is mid to late September. Anytime that we get a cold front and some rain come late summer/fall, these fish will be activated to come into our West Michigan Rivers. (gettingbitguideservice.com)
The most local river in the neighborhood is the Baldwin Creek River. This historic river is on the north branch of the Pere Marquette and was the 1st river in the country to house a brown trout. With the drowned timber and big amount of private property on this river it sees little pressure and many of its fish die of old age. I keep this river stocked around the lodge to help area fishing. The jewel of the P. M. Is the Flies-Only part that extends from M-37 south of Baldwin to Gleason’s Landing. This seven-mile part features broad gravel stretches that attract pods of spawning fish. Deep bends and runs stack up with fish waiting to take their turn on the gravel. Anglers use polarized glasses to spot the redds and spawning activity, then drift egg flies, nymphs and streamers past the rainbows, hoping to induce a strike. The area is well-liked with fly-fishers, and the lines of drift-boats floating down frequently competitor a Thanksgiving Day parade. No-kill rules instituted some seasons ago have done little to lessen fishing pressure. (gameandfishmag.com)
Fishing has improved largely with good numbers of Coho, Steelhead, Kings and Laker Trout showing up offshore. majority of people are fishing between the 28 and 34 lines west and in the top 70 feet. Copper lines with spoons out 100-400 feet have worked well and leadcore has taken fish. Slide Divers and free sliders on riggers have also been efficient. Our own Capt Larry Scharich took a King over 31# yesterday to prove the big boys are back. (Check this site out)
