Offshore action really heats up right around the time that the Summer Solstice occurs. Shark fishing typically takes hold around the second to 3rd week of June as the regional water temperatures begin to warm up to their seasonal norms. The recognized migratory path of many of the most sought after Apex Predators has them moving progressively through the waters outside of Block Island as the June wanes. A good rule of thumb, when pursuing the toothy critters, is to head out to the 20 or 30 fathom curves south and east of Block Island, after the second to 3rd week of June and look ever more eastward as the month draws to a close. Moped rentals the nose when you get off the ship. There are really about 3 or 4 moped rental businesses inside walking distance of the ship. Some vendors will give you a coupon for a $10 discount or they’ll include a free drink with your rental, etc. We really wanted to rent mopeds, however unfortunately everything was sold out and there were 6 of us in our party. I could recommend that you make arrangements ahead of time or as early as you get off the ship to insure that you’ll have a bike available. Bicycles are plentiful and they rent bicycles built for two. My son checked on a ship rental but they were quite costly and we were not certain about the waters and rocks in the neighborhood. In Narragansett, stated strong false albacore fishing along most of the Narragansett shoreline this week. Again, the bait was pushed in tight to shore in most places, which has resulted in surfcasters finding as much success as ship anglers in many cases. The sporadic green bonito has still been blended in with the albies, however for the most part they have moved back out and are caught around Block Island. The local striped bass fishing has started to enhance, and has coincided with the weather being a more fall-like. The adult bunker that have been around the harbor all summer are starting to get harassed by bass in the 30-pound class. (onthewater.com)

Bluefish and Striped Bass are the common sport fish, both inshore and offshore. The bluefish, considered by many to be the finest fighting fish in the Atlantic, may be caught May through November. These voracious feeders average 4 to 6 pounds, with 11 to 15 pounders not unusual, particularly in the fall. Equally revered is the striped bass. Found all along our shores, especially in rocky regions and in estuaries, salt ponds and rivers, this fighter can reach up to 65 pounds, with many 40 pounders caught annually. (anglerweb.com)

E. There are fast food and gourmet restaurants, convenience stores and a range of shops to accommodate your every need. One of the oldest restaurants in Montauk is the Shagwong, where you will see natives and visitors gather to exchange fishing yarns and plans for the day ahead. This is really a striper angler’s gathering spot, and the fish you eat there were invariably caught that day. Mike Boccio, from the Jenglo/Prime Time III in Orient, checked in to let me know fishing was great after the full moon. Bill Walker’s charter on the Jenglo yielded 30 big bass to 45 pounds. Six of those fish were over 30. The fish were all caught on eels the night after the full moon. Captain Mike says he’ll continue to run the Prime Time III for sea bass and porgies through October 5, at which time he’ll switch over to blackfish. A recent survey by Stripers Forever, a no-fee internet organization devoted to making the striped bass a gamefish all along the Atlantic coast, confirmed the decline of the coastal striper population that migrates from the big spawning grounds in Chesapeake Bay up to New England. Although there were brief shots of bigger bass in quantity off Montauk and Block Island last summer, fishing for linesiders was poor in New England. The great 2011 Chesapeake year class failed to produce the volume of small bass projected, and the lack of stripers to the east was reflected in the poor ship fishing we experienced in the fall — while the surf fishing at that time could be better portrayed as awful. On the inshore scene, the speckled trout bite was red hot. Moving water is the key to successful fishing. We have been limiting out of trout on my charters the last few weeks. Redfish have been feeding aggressively on the moving tides particularly the incoming tides around the full moon that we had. The reds have been chewing on big shiners tossed into the potholes and along the mangroves. A tactic I use to keep the birds from attacking the chummers is to give the chummers a squeeze and release the baits right beside the ship and not to toss them high in the air.
