Leopard Shark Fishing Tomales Bay

Possibly one of the strangest stories about the fish had to do with the Unification Church the Moonies and how one of its pastors became the biggest poacher of baby leopard sharks in history. Reverend Kevin Thompson of San Leandro s Bay Area Family Church and his Ocean Church fishing ministry were accused of poaching about six thousand baby leopard sharks between 1991 and 2004. Thompson could pay fishermen $2 to $3 per pup then sell them to dealers for $20-$35. The dealers in turn were able to sell the pups for as much as $450 to customers during the U. No snare can be used to help in taking sturgeon. Only one single barbless hook can be used on a line to take sturgeon. The sturgeon must voluntarily take the bait or tempt in its mouth. No sturgeon can be taken by trolling, snagging, or with the use of firearms. Sturgeon may not be gaffed, nor shall any person use any kind of firearm to help in landing or killing any sturgeon. Tamar, I have gotta concur with Hank. It was some number of sharks before I learned that the ammonia smell uric acid was not a needed part of shark fishing. I used to toss them in the cooler, fish all day in NC heat, and clean fish at night. I’d soak them in milk overnight and the meat was generally new and sweet. The biggest problem I had was that the smell frequently lingered in my nose or in my imagination, so I’d smell it although my dinner guests did not. I seldom ate sharks the same day I caught them. Mead said Konatich then admitted using the gill net and showed him the three sea bass. Wardens said they found three more big sea bass in the restaurant’s cold storage unit that had been caught that night and more filleted sea bass in a close walk-in freezer, with a juvenile halibut and a 4 1/2-foot leopard shark. Most fish are ectotherms and for this reason, water temperature is thought to be one of the major physical determinants of behaviour. We tested the theory that behavioural thermoregulation occurs in 4 species of reef sharks n 58, where water temperature influences patterns of long-term >1 yr motion, by analysing acoustic monitoring and environmental datasets. We also used biotelemetry to measure the body temperature of 5 adult female blacktip reef sharks Carcharhinus melanopterus in answer to changes in water temperature, to test if they partake in inshore aggregations possibly to increase metabolic rates.
