Water temps will reach the 60-degree mark by the end of April. In this weather bass will start to migrate into their spawning patterns. They’ll pull off the wood, riprap and points for the favored aquatic vegetation of the flats for spawning. At the end of April and into May, milfoil, hydrilla and eelgrass will be blooming during the river and flats. But, bass favor to spawn in the shallow waters of the flats. There are some number of factors that make summertime fishing on the flats more appealing to me than the early season. In the spring, fishing for big stripers is frequently a hit-or-miss deal as the fish are on the move, heading to the spawning grounds in the Susquehanna and North East rivers. Plus, in the spring, the flats are frequently seriously impacted by heavy rain and storms, when high, muddy, and cold water on the flats can shut down fishing many days and weeks at a time. The center bay region offers lots of fishing alternatives this week. Striped bass are spreading out at different channel edges ambushing schools of bait being swept along by inflexible currents. There are lots of chumming, chunking and live lining opportunities at the Hill area but other places like Tolly’s, Thomas Point and alike steep edges are now holding fish. They’re on the move although and it pays to be adaptable and to check out different places. Trolling is a good choice in that it lets one to cover more water and possibly bump into some breaking fish action or being able to spot suspended fish on a depth recorder. I can typically estimated inside a trip or two how many times I have been fishing in a year, however not this year. I was good at keeping a log throughout the winter and spring, however in the summer as I went out more, I started grouping trips into complete posts. I think the last time I went out was in early September when I was driving through New England with my wife and dog. My 1st real fishing trip of 2010 was some time on march for chain pickerel at Unicorn Lake. That makes for about a 7 month fishing year. If I had to guess, I’d say I went between 15 and 20 times. Some great perch and crappie fishing is happening now on both the Pocomoke and Nanticoke rivers. We are catching good numbers of yellow perch and crappie on the Pocomoke near Snow Hill casting 1/16 oz crappie jig ‘n minnow mixes. The sporadic bass and pickerel will surprise you also.
