Lake Talquin is a 8, 800-acre lake located in the northwest part of the state, 10 miles west of Tallahassee, Florida. It’s wrapped on the southern and southwestern shore by Lake Talquin State Park. The lake has an average depth of over 68 feet. Swimmers beware – the lake is a wildlife habitat that will include alligators and snakes. It’s a great lake for canoeing, kayaking and boating. There are many ship docks at the state park and other places around the lake. (aa-fishing.com)
The lake is down about 1 foot. it’s to get to a point where it may be dangerous with all the stumps, if you think you know the lake. The bass fishing looks to be good one day and two days afterward they won t bite in that area. The key is 9-12 of water and finding the balls of shads on the break lines. I had a good guide trip last Saturday and caught 23 fish on a half day trip. We caught them all on a Carolina Rig. There were no big fish but we steadily caught fish. Big bass may be caught on a black and blue jig. The bite is slow. When they bite the jig, it s a big fish. Fish slow with lots of patience. (twzenterprises.com)

– Black crappies are excellent game fish and are greatly regarded by bait fishermen and fake-tempt anglers alike. They’re easily caught throughout prespawning periods when the fish are congregated in big schools. Trolling with small, live minnows or a spinner-fly mix is productive. They’ll also strike subsurface flies, small spinners, jigs, and tiny crankbaits. Crappies tend to suspend in midwater, so you may have to experiment to find the right depth. As a sport fish, particular bag and size bound rules apply, and you may be able to register a qualifying catch as part of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s ‘Big Catch’ program. Heaton slow-trolls with an electric motor, using enough power to keep slack out of the lines, presenting jigs about 2 feet above the crappies he s located on sonar. Trolling speed is important. He either increases or decreases the rate as indicated by the air temperature. Speed must be increased as the sun warms the water in the afternoon and makes fish more active. This is particularly true on off-color lakes, where suspended sediment particles take in the sun s rays, rising water temperature faster than in clear lakes. (outdoorlife.com)
Steward points out that reports from local anglers, also as data from trawling, electrofishing and creel surveys compiled by fisheries biologists, and knowledge of habitat trends all go into selecting these lakes. The list concentrates on bigger water bodies that have good access and can sustain more fishing effort, so if your local lake isn t on the list, don t be scared to attempt it. One of the best things about crappie fishing inFlorida is that you may find them in nearly all of our lakes. (Click here to find out more)
In 1971, roughly 20, 000 acres 80 km of uplands and 10, 000 acres 40 km of lake bottom were donated by the Florida Power company to the State of Florida to form Lake Talquin State Recreation Area. Most of the shore of the lake is part of Lake Talquin State Park, one of Florida’s State Parks. The waters that now cover Lake Talquin ‘s floodplain are shallow except along the old channel of the river. The abundance of dead trees and stumps scattered about are reminders of the rich floodplain forest that once covered the area before the lake was made. Most of the stumps may be found right under the water on the eastern end of the lake causing problems for boaters. (anglerweb.com)
Lake Washington is just about an hour southwest of Grenada, and has only become nationally recognized in the last 5 or 6 years. Washington differs from the other famous lakes in Mississippi as it’s an oxbow, and it differs from other oxbows because it’s now cut off from the river that made it. Though there’s an area of 10 to 15 feet of water, most of the lake consists of coverless flats ranging in depth from 5 to 8 feet, enclosed on one side by houses and piers, and the other by ancient cypress groves. As with the other Mississippi lakes, the growth rate of the crappie is phenomenal, finding lots of 4-year-old, 15-inch crappie ranging from 2 to 2 1/2 pounds, and turning out many 3-plus-pounders yearly.
