In the meantime, for active, hard core ice anglers, the quality and quantity of fish available, brings them back to Lake Simcoe year after year. The Ministry of Natural Resources MNR continues to stock 50, 000 lake trout and 140, 000 whitefish into the lake yearly. This helps keep the cold water fish communities prime for the thousands of anglers who target these coldwater species. The good news is that there are rising numbers of natural or wild lakers and whities present for hardwater fans who can tell if they have a stocked fish or not, simply by wanting to see if one of the fishes fins is clipped. Lake Simcoe, Just 40 minutes north of Toronto, was recognized for decades as the "Ice Fishing Capital of North America" and it's no wonder, considering that more people fish this inland Lake Simcoe throughout the winter than any other body of water in Ontario. In spite of its fame among the ice fishing crowd but, Lake Simcoe is still one of the most productive hard water fisheries anywhere on the continent. Perch are by far the most plentiful catch and like to congregate at Cook’s Bay near Innisfil and in Lake Couchiching with their ideal habitat conditions. Perch travel around in schools searching for food, if at you don t have luck at your 1st hole, keep moving till you find the schools. And you may hook the odd pike in your quest for perch. If fishing particularly for pike, attempt shallow water, less than ten feet. (brucegreysimcoe.com)

Lake Simcoe also offers excellent ice fishing for pike. Pike in extra of 12-14 lbs aren’t unusual in the lake. The pike’s major food forage is perch, and will inhabit the same regions where the perch are schooling. Pike are frequently caught while perch fishing, and may be a nice surprise. Ice fishing anglers aiming at pike on Lake Simcoe, usually fish shallow under 10ft, and use big shinners, chubs or sucker minnows under a tip-up. Big dead baits like smelt hooked on a deadstrike rig may also be lethal, particularly throughout early ice. (thefishinguide.com)
We stayed at the Peninsula Resort for one night on a mini holiday. We shall certainly go back! Our 1st impression was that it was ideally situated right on the south shore of Lake Simcoe – all the rooms back onto the beach and have a great view of the lake. The rooms are spacious with 2 comfy double beds and a well equipped kitchenette with an eat-in area looking out onto the lake through patio doors. The kitchen has a full sized fridge, a 2 burner cook top, a small microwave, a drip coffee maker and comes with adequate plates and cutlery for 4. None of this info is on their website which is a pity, as we could have been better prepared and brought our own coffee, milk, sugar and breakfast provisions. (tripadvisor.com)
We loaded up the car and set out from Toronto, Canada about 120km North to Lake Simcoe which is a conventional and well-liked lake that supports the sport of ice-fishing and many make the trek out and line the concession roads of Simcoe County to get a part of the action. Ice Fishing season usually lasts a short-window from late December to March and the oftentimes unpredictable weather can make for good or bad ice years. This year but, saw about 8-10 inches of ice in places and cold temps and flurries meant we could be chasing the fish all over the lake. (adventureseekers.co)
