On lots the prolonged warm weather this fall has really helped the bite particularly for anglers who want to fish shallow. Instead of starting to move deep bass have continued to hang around only some feet of water, staying in more of a fall pattern than an early winter pattern. but, tournament bass fisherman Andy Wicker of Pomaria says that Lake Monticello isn’t one of. “We’re finding fish off points, and particularly for smallmouth, we like points with clusters of rocks in 10 to 14 feet of water, ” he said. “For largemouth, we’re catching some really big fish in three to eight feet of water off the points and around shoreline objects. Find some deeper rocks and work a flat-style crankbait for smallmouth and a Shad Rap for largemouth. Crawfish patterns are great for both species. I use 8-pound test line so my lures will get into that 10- to 14-foot depth range. On occasion, we’ll use our electronics and graph a point and find a rockpile with fish depicted around the rocks. Lake Monticello, also formally called Monticello Reservoir, was produced in 1978 as a pumped storage building managed by South Carolina Electric and Gas. It gives cooling water for a single-unti nuclear reactor and its outflow goes directly into Parr Reservoir. Both lakes comprise the Fairfield Hydro Station and the V. C. Sumner Nuclear Station. This isn’t a tourist lake, however anglers and boaters are welcome to use all 54 miles of shoreline except for 7. 2 miles located inside the Nuclear Exclusion Zone around the reactor. A smaller 300-acre lake named Monticello Recreation Lake is attached to Lake Monticello, divided by a dike at the northern end where Hwy 99 crosses the bigger 6, 700-acre lake. (lakebrowser.com)
Catfish: Good. Captain Rodger Taylor says that in general the bite is pretty good on Lake Wateree, though a little less consistent than on Lake Wylie now. 1st thing in the morning Rodger suggests anchoring in 24-26 foot deep water with vertical drops or water flow, frequently meaning up the river but on occasion related to the old channel more down the lake. That bite may be hit-or-miss, and if anglers are really trophy hunting they may want to stay and wait. If they want to find a more consistent bite then they’ll want to check down to a different pattern, and on occasion this will mean looking as shallow as only some feet of water. (indexjournal.com)
Just to good. Captain Brad Fowler says that winter bass are learned near the major channel. A good number of fish also relate to the deeper creek channels and anglers can really fish the kind of area they favor. Most of the year there are fishermen who concentrate in the more riverine upper part of the lake below Lake Jocassee and fish can surely be caught in the warmest mid-lake part where the temperate water discharge raises water temperatures the year round. The northern end may have some of the biggest fish, in part due to greater occurrence of blueback herring, however it’s also one of the most hard sections of the lake to learn to fish. (scnow.com)
Crappie: good. Guide Wendell Wilson says that crappie fishing is large open on Lake Russell. Fish are around the banks and Wendell believes the spawn is underway because his ship is catching big females both full of eggs and that seem to have laid out. The common spring pattern on Russell is to have waves of progressively smaller crappie move shallower, with the big fish 1st, however due to slow spring all of the crappie seem to be moving shallow now. Now it is possible to catch 1 1/2 pound fish on one cast and 5 inch fish on the next cast. A float with a jig or minnow will catch fish around the banks, and fish may also be caught trolling jigs and minnows in 6-10 feet of water. (wezl.iheart.com)
Crappie: Good to good. Captain Steve English says that crappie fishing in the Santee Cooper lakes is still strong, however as projected seasonally everything is starting to move deeper. The best action was coming fishing 18-24 feet down over deep brush with minnows. Bream: Good. Captain Steve English says that bluegill remain bunched up around brushpiles and continue to feed well, however like the crappie they have moved deeper. Fishing crickets 20-25 feet down over brush in 25-35 feet of water was the best pattern, with crappie found on some of the same brush. Bluegill are usually a more violent than crappie so the best bet for anglers aiming at crappie is to move on to the next brushpile if they start catching bream. (thelakemurraynews.net)
Though smaller than Lake Marion, Lake Moultrie is the 3rd biggest lake in South Carolina – and, like Lake Marion, caution is urged when navigating in shallow water, since there are many submerged stumps along its shorelines, and aquatic vegetation is present in backwater sloughs. Once away from the shoreline, the stump hazards decrease and the most of Lake Moultrie is suited for pleasure boaters and fisherman alike. Its complex series of dams and locks also will include a ‘fish lift’ that lets for passage of such species as shad and herring. (southeastdiscovery.com)
Catfish: good. Captain Rodger Taylor says that the channel catfish bite was remaining on mid-depth flats with 10-17 feet of water. Fish are scattered but taking a range of cut baits well. On some days the head part of the bait has made bigger fish, and drifting was a strong technique. It s flathead catfish season, and flatheads will take live baits fished around brush piles. Night fishing can be the most productive and comfy way to target flatheads with high daytime temperatures, however you may be able to t expect to catch numbers of fish on every trip. On one recent night fish seemed to be biting short, and a stinger hook can be a good way to increase the hook-up rate under these situation. (slvtalks.com)
