On the major basin of the lake, fish continue to be seen during the day but need some coaxing to bite. Downsize your spoons; rattle baits seem to be drawing fish in over 19 to 35 feet. Saugers and tullibees are making up the most of the catch with some walleyes, perch, and northern pike blended in. Ice conditions on the Rainy River differ so work through a resort if you plan on fishing it. At the Northwest Angle, the 22- to 24-foot mud and sand is producing walleyes. Fishing on a hot sunny day. Using sucker minnows, live and dead didn’t take long for the Bass and Northerns to find my bait suspended about 7-8 feet below my bobber in 14′ of water. Firs fish came at about the 20 min mark and each susiquent fish came about every 10-20 mins. All were of good eating size and many were feisty. Puting up many good fights. I was fishing about 200 yards from one of the many channels on this lake and have generally had good luck. The fishing pier just off Tonkawood Road and North Shore Drive near the public access in Orono is situated so you may be able to take benefit of the bass, crappie and sunfish that abound in the bay. The shoreline to the north of the fishing pier was a usually productive northern pike fishery, also. Pike is usually less common in Lake Minnetonka, however one of the lake’s few concentrations of the big, toothy game fish lives in the waters of Maxwell Bay. I know about Calhoun/Lake of the Isles/Cedar and Minnetonka, however I'm pretty certain there’s lots of fishing pressure on those lakes and I'd like to find something with a little less development on the shoreline, at least a less-trafficked lake to go fishing on. I don't mind driving up to an hour for an afternoon/evening's trip; any more can be a bit inconvenient. Can anybody recommend some good lakes with decent fish populations? I'll be in a kayak, so I don't need a full-fledged ship launch as much as a place to park my Explorer. I appreciate any help. I haven't fished since I moved here and I can't take it anymore.
