Lake Memphremagog Ice Fishing Derby

On the way back Chaffee mentions that the lake in winter poses risk for those not cautious. A local doctor went out on Nordic skates some years back, fell through and drowned. Just three weeks ago, Chaffee s fishing pals helped pull one of their friends and his young daughter from a truck that was falling through the ice. And last Saturday, in late afternoon, unbeknownst to Chaffee, a local farmer drowned while moving his shanty across the ice with his tractor. (vtdigger.org)

 The folded part was observable from the a semi-uninterrupted line of tented ice about a foot high and big regions of frozen slush where blowing snow had caught in the open pools of the ridge.   The accident occurred about halfway along the length of the folded part. It’s  common for an overlapped ridge that terminates in the center of an ice sheet to have a part of folded ridge at the end.   Folded ridges are usually harder to see because they don’t stick up much.   When they get covered with slush and some dry snow like this one was they’re harder to spot.   Low light makes the situation worse. The lake is stocked both spring and fall with about 7, 000 catchable rainbow and brown trout. About 7, 500 walleyes are stocked annually and are a common catch, with some exceeding 20 inches in length. Here, too, there are more big pickerel than average. We will concentrate on the steeper edges of shoals and breaklines offshore, where most fishermen seldom venture, dragging Tubes, Spider Grubs, Carolina Rigs and Drop Shot Rigs to persuade the less active bass. This was a AWESOME catch, its a humorous story really. I was out fishing with my family wife and nephew fishing for perch WHEN I got a big HIT! I had a great fight with this fish considering I was fishing with my small "light" action rod with 4 pound test, each one on the ship where excited and when we netted there was a big hooray. Followed by pictures, then released for this fish to go and grow bigger for another great angler to have a chance at this fish. This Fish was caught on the St-laurence river bellow saunders power dam in the Cornwall area along a nice weed bed, since that day we’ve been able to target walleye perch pike all along the weed bed, and the best part, its directly in front of our cabin : . "We spent lots of time crossing the border and biking in Quebec. It was unbelievable. I have been lucky to bike in many places and the rides we did to Ayers Cliff, Way’s Mills, Sherbrooke, etc. Were among the best I have ever done, every ride ended with a roundtrip down to Eagle Point and the flat, beautiful run home on the bike path. We ate at Mechant Steak in Magog one night and I could greatly recommend it. They open all of the windows and the breeze blows right through. The food was good. A winter ice-fishing mainstay in Vermont usually was perch. The trick in perch fishing is to find a ‘hot’ hole. In any perch area there are generally certain spots that produce best. I won’t use up much time at a hole unless bites are coming fast. Keep moving and drilling new holes till you hit a bonanza. I’m also fractional to certain lures. For some reason, colors like green or red are tops in shallow water. Silver looks to be best in deep water.
