I start with my new fangled Shakespeare Wonder Poles. They are fiberglass telescopic poles that are intended to be used like the old "cane pole". They come in sizes from 10 feet to 20 feet in length and are made of the same quality and durability as the Ugly Stik. The fish seem to be smarter so we now use 4 and 6 pound test monofilament and on occasion that new stuff called fluorocarbon. We still slide on a float, however now they’re made of Styrofoam and come in so many shapes, sizes and colors, you could get perplexed just trying to choose which float to use. I like the kind that you can use as a slip bobber. (hammondfishing.com)
When heading to the Kissimmee Chain, have some number of rods with different baits tied on so you may be able to switch up quickly to learn what works best. Fish near hydrilla and Kissimmee grass, differ the speed of your retrieve and periodically let a bait drop to the bottom, give it a second, twitch, then reel in. Panfish are all over the chain, however attempt canals and docks or the edges of vegetation. Shellcrackers and bluegills are the major draw, however crappie fishing is good here also. As we move deeper into fall the shorter light hours and cooler daytime temperatures help the water to cool. Water temps are 73 to 75 degrees now which leads to longer activity periods for the bass. Every year at this time the biggest bass that swim in Okeechobee start to move toward the spawning regions in the lake where they’ll feed heavily, then sooner or later spawn. The Okeechobee strain of Florida largemouth is distinctive. Whereas female Northern bass will all spawn inside a month or so of each other the Okeechobee bass spawn will start as early as the full moon of November and waves of female bass will continue to move in and spawn during the fall, winter and spring.
