Lake Eufaula Al Crappie Fishing Report

As we we began marking fish nearly now along the channel edges. Ledges are the most distinctive fish-holding feature in Lake Eufaula. The lake is comparatively shallow in general with creek and river channels cutting through big flats. Usually, the edges of the channels are nearly vertical, forming steep dropoffs of 10 feet or more. The fish like to hold on or near these “ledges” in the late winter because they let lots of vertical motion without having to travel long distances as could be the case in a slowly sloping bottom. There are two bridges that span this mid lake area. One bridge is the Hwy. 83 bridge. Just below it’s the Central Railroad bridge. Man made rip-rap rocks line both of these bridges for miles and these rocks hold heat during the day as bordering waters warm. They also hold bass and crappie in April and May. There are many sunken brush piles placed by Alabama Power Company. They are obviously obvious with buoys marked as fish attractors. One small feeder creek Tobannee Creek, may be found just below the Railroad bridge on the Georgia side of the lake. (fishingalabama.com)

We have been catching our trout on the grass flats in two to four feet of water. Having the water near 68 degrees or better was most productive. DOA shrimp, CAL jerk baits and shad tails have been our best lures for catching the trout. Work your lures gradually this time of year for best results. The redfish we have caught are hanging under the mangroves and docks. Get your lures under the mangroves to find the redfish. it is a challenge some days, however it produces fish! you may be able to find lots of jacks, ladyfish and mackerel around the inlet regions on the incoming tide. Watch the Lowrance depth finder and fish can be either suspended or tight on cover. Stick with spoons on the river ledges and bounce the off the bottom. A Hopkins 1/2 oz is just but keep moving. Spoons on the river ledges bounced off the bottom and use small ones can get some strikes. Fish any deep standing timber with spoons and jigs, and use black finesse worms, jigs and spoons. Neely Henry both great crappie lakes, said Mike Holley, biologist with the Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries in Eastaboga. An angler pulled a 17-inch, 3-pound black crappie from Neely Henry in 2012. Logan Martin seemed to be improving for crappie numbers throughout the last several years. Both Neely Henry and Weiss have had average year-classes of crappie the past two years after a boom year-class was made in both lakes in 2010. Numbers can be down a little at both lakes, however fish from the 2010 year-class should supply some big crappie for anglers this year. (gameandfishmag.com)

Some of the best fishing occurs in Cowikee Creek near Lakepoint State Park Resort. Some holes in the creek channel drop to more than 30 feet deep, making excellent conditions to run deep-diving crankbaits, jigs or Texas-rigged plastics. On one trip, Williams and I used his electric motor to troll shad-colored lipless crankbaits and jerkbaits beside the drop-off edges in Cowikee Creek. We not only caught largemouth bass, however crappie, hybrid stripers and a big channel catfish on the same lures just a short distance from the resort. (alabamaliving.coop)

Aliceville Public occasion called Pickensville Lake by local anglers and is best recognized for its largemouth bass and crappie fishing. The 8, 300-acre reservoir roughly 12 miles northeast of Aliceville is made by the Tom Bevill Lock and Dam, located a mile southwest of Pickensville just off Alabama Highway 14. There are two public access regions with bank and ship access and one user fee boating access area. Since October 1993 there was a 9-inch minimum length bound on crappie. Lake Washington is just about an hour southwest of Grenada, and has only become nationally recognized in the last 5 or 6 years. Washington differs from the other famous lakes in Mississippi as it’s an oxbow, and it differs from other oxbows because it’s now cut off from the river that made it. Though there’s an area of 10 to 15 feet of water, most of the lake consists of coverless flats ranging in depth from 5 to 8 feet, enclosed on one side by houses and piers, and the other by ancient cypress groves. As with the other Mississippi lakes, the growth rate of the crappie is phenomenal, finding lots of 4-year-old, 15-inch crappie ranging from 2 to 2 1/2 pounds, and turning out many 3-plus-pounders yearly. But what about Lake of The Woods and Rainy Lake in Ontario? Lake St. Clair? Chippewa Flowage? The Mississippi backwaters? they are great crappie fisheries by anybody’s standards. The reason nobody mentions those places is because big crappie tournaments are rarely held north of the Mason Dixon line. Is that because great crappie waters do not exist up North? Or because fishery managers up north fail to understand the sociological impacts engendered by great crappie fishing? (in-fisherman.com)
