I have found the Marshallese quite friendly and social overall, and only wished I knew a bit of the language most of my Marshallese does not go much farther than ‘Yokwe’ hello, welcome, or literally ‘you’re a rainbow’ and ‘Kommol Tata’ thanks much. Many of the particularly younger Marshallese are brought up learning English also as their native language, however most signs you’ll see through the Marshall Islands are written in both English and Marshallese. We’d get some fish, then the complete community could have to share this meager amount. The fish weren’t fit to eat there. They were toxic because of what they ate on the reef. We got sick from them, like when your arms and legs fall asleep and you can not feel anything. We’d get up in the morning to go to our canoes and fall over because we were so ill. Sea walls have been built on both sides of the road to the airport and the runway itself, and are now being continued toward Laura. From time to time the ocean washes across this road and throughout the last decade, the island of Majuro has lost up to 20 per cent of its beachfront. Locals believe that the powerful storms and sweeping high tides are causing most of the coastal wearing away. Majuro has built up sea walls to prevent more wearing away, using garbage imported from the United States. Land is scarce, but, and the walls need constant rebuilding. Congratulations to the Marshall Islands for the biggest shark fin ban and commercial shark fishing ban in Micronesia- it is surely another brick in the wall of rebuilding a healthy ocean decimated by distance nation fishing fleets. Palau on the other end of Micronesia started the reform, followed by the two USA related regions of the CNMI and Guam. Nobody wanted to follow Palau’s lead till a island leader who is a avid fishermen was alerted and asked by another recreational fishermen to introduce a ban on the sale/trade and ownership of shark fins.
