Kingfisher Trout Lodge is situated on a farm some kilometers away from Machadodorp just off the Schoemanskloof pass road. This was my 1st visit to this excellent venue. The accommodation was perfect for a chilled fly fishing weekend away with my wife and her family. There are five dams on the property with a stretch of the Swartkoppies river running through the farm. In a conversation with Ockie, the owner of the property, he mentioned that this part of the river had never been stocked before. I was a little dissapointed as I have caught lots of fish in a part of this river more downstream, however it could be impossible for trout to be up in this part because there are five big waterfalls that not a salmon on steroids could be able to navigate. Day 2: 18th dec: we decided to go to the major dam and fish there. My and my 2 sisters played swam and canoed for the 1st few hours. A bit afterward a small carp took, it burrowed its head down into the ground but we got it out, amazingly it was a mirror carp. We carried on and soon after another one took. Dad pulled this one in with ease. It was a normal common carp. Lastly for the day and the most thrilling one took, dad started reading this one in. The line got rapped around the reel and it froze so while I was sorting out the real dad took the line and used it as a handline and the fish started pulling out and it went slack.
