My friend pitching Trix Jetty Worms into the kelp canopy looking for big calico bass. The Jetty Worm is vibrant colored weedless jig with a high action trailer intended to withstand the abuse of bruiser calico bass and lingcod. Throughout one our drifts we kept noticing big splashes in the distance. Some predator was pushing bait to the surface quickly, causing the bait to jump out the water. I made my way over to the commotion and glided in so that I would not spook the fish. I found a nice alleyway in the kelp and made a nice cast towards the nervous bait. As I retrieved my bait I noticed a black shadow under the kelp canopy and watched in total shock as 40-50 lb White Sea Bass inhaled my bait and just as quickly spit it back out. Terez 80H, Avet MXJ . I have got 50 lb. Braid on about 2/3 of the spool with 30 lb mono filling in the remainder. A 2/0 J-style bait hook finished the setup. John told me not to be scared to throw the big baits and I proceeded to throw flylined ‘dines and macks as deep into the kelp as I could. I was to get bit and I managed to score a legal, however I also spent lots of time in line tangles because the current was pushing my bait toward the stern and people were casting over my line. I forgot that the afternoon current was strong here. The last hour or so of the ride, I was able to find an open spot on the stern. (socalsalty.com)
Summer and fall are primetime for kayaking in San Diego. The conditions are usually calm and the air and water temperatures are warm enough to wear simply a bathing suit or light wetsuit top. Beautiful weather and very clear water may be found in winter and spring but, on the best days, a full wetsuit can be in order and swell and wind conditions should be taken into consideration. Launch ramps and beaches inside San Diego’s protected bays are the surest bet for easy launching and landing any time of year. Any local kayak service or the lifeguards can tell you about when and where it is safe to go paddling at coastal beaches. (sandiego.org)
Kelp forests are a kind of marine ecosystem established around colonies of kelp. Kelp beds contain a rich biodiversity. Kelp can stretch up to 90 feet or more from their anchors on the ocean floor to the surface, allowing a vertical infrastructure that’s home to many fish and invertebrate species. Kelp forests also frequently attract mammals as well as whales, sea lions, seals, and scuba diving humans and kayakers, since these kelp beds are observable at the surface from atop the kayaks. Melissa Studer, marine conservationist and senior program officer of the Grunion Greeters is here to check in with her volunteers. She started Grunion Greeters in San Diego in 2001 as collaboration between the San Diego Parks and Recreation Department, Birch Aquarium, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, California Sea Grant, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric governance, to deal with concerns that beach-grooming practices may be destroying the grunion eggs. Five years on, the project has spread all the way up the coast to San Francisco. (del-mar-guide.com)
That inundated the area. In fact the sea grass provided an unsettling experience for us. Usually when there’s a surge or waves where we snorkel we look down at the ground to get a feel for our place and motion. It’s grounding to see a non-moving sea bottom when you’re moving all over. But in the cove when a surge or wave could come through and we looked to the bottom, it was all moving, due to flowing sea grass. That feeling, coupled with the low visibility, was pretty uneasy. It lead to an nearly seasick feeling in both Nicole and I. (tropicalsnorkeling.com)
