Thunderstorms during the region, with hail and heavy rain, pepped up all the local streams. In the lower country with a higher wearing away possible the streams quickly became turbid and unfishable but in the higher country the goes were high, clear and fishable. Trout responded quickly, foraging for nymphs and surface food during the day. Dry beetle patterns were successful in some streams but as the sun dried out the landscape grasshoppers became the prime target. Banged down hard to imitate the landing of a natural bug, hopper patterns can attract fish from some distance away and it pays to wait for some time before lifting the fly off the water for the next cast. Over the rainbow trout have been really on the bite on the lake, with fish to 1kg common and some brown trout up to 3kg. It’s normal for this time of year for the lakes water levels to be low and still dropping and that’s true of the present conditions. The dropping water brings the weed beds close to shore, so we really also start to get a bit of polaroid fishing happening. That will only improve over the coming months. My understanding is that the Woolly Bugger has its origin in America where it seems to be tied, as a leach imitation. Having said that there’s also an English fly with bead chin eyes called a Dog Nobler that’s alike to a conventional Woolly Bugger. Whatever the name or origin this style of fly is a great fish taker in a large range of conditions. There are most likely more variations to the Woolly Bugger than I have had breakfasts. Some are over-dressed some under-dressed, some weighted others not, on all kinds of hooks and in all kinds of colour mixes. In the past couple of weeks there haven’t been lots of shore established fisherman walking the shoreline. The vast most have instead been giving their boats a serious work out while trolling which as already mentioned is producing great results. One of the common questions I get asked is which tempt works best? on occasion I’m able to give a certain colour or kind of tempt answer but for this specific report the only honest answer is that it’s impossible to give any specifics. The range of colours that seem to be working is nearly any one that you could find in a rainbow. I have had so many reports with varying types and colours of lures that I don t have idea what I should put on the end of my lines next! possibly, close your eyes and take a pick may be best! there’s one comment that’s consistent during which is that almost all trout, Brown and Rainbows alike are closer to the bottom of the water column rather than near the top. And just below the snowline, was relocated from its original site on the banks of the Snowy River to make way for the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme. Some 100, 000 men from 30 countries worked for 25 years on the scheme, the biggest engineering project of its type in Australia. The original town was flooded, however some of the buildings were moved to their current site next to Lake Jindabyne. It looks that the fishing in Jindabyne was pretty tough recently and the locals are struggling. I met an older local while scrumping crab apples from trees outside his house from which to make crab apple jelly who was most excited by my catch. It turned out to be an emotional meeting as he had just returned from the shops clutching two copies The Snowy Times. With trembling fingers he opened one up and showed my wife and I an article titled The Anthony Pringle Memorial Fishing Competition which shown a photo of a youngish looking man. Then he said that is my son . He volunteered the details of his untimely death at just 45 last September from a heart attack as tears streamed down his face. (fishraider.com.au)
