Part of the discussion will include suggestions to let dogs on leash, bicycles, and jogging on the trails in the natural area. There are studies underway to find out any special flora and fauna regions to avoid and/or to showcase before new trail alignments for any public use are finalized and constructed. From the Visitor Center, your initial plan is to simply hike down the Palmetto Boardwalk, which elevates you through a healthy black gum and cypress swamp. Nothing tiring, lots to see. But at the end of the boardwalk you re so intrigued by this lush coastal swamp forest community that you take a right onto the 2-mile Ivy Gut Trail, which will take you along Goose Creek. Since you want a peek at the Mighty Pamlico River you connect over to the 1. 9-mile Goose Creek Trail. As you hike to the Goose Creek/Pamlico confluence you notice a sign for Flatty Creek Trail: it s just a mile-long loop and it holds the promise of an elevated looking at platform from which you may be able to get a better look at Goose Creek and the Pamlico, which now is still called a river but is taking on sound proportions. . Some number of years ago Fluvanna County bought a big parcel of undeveloped farm land along the Rivanna in Palmyra. Sports fields and trails were added and the old farm house restored and turned into a museum about farm and river life in the neighborhood since the early English settlements. But the plentiful natural history at the Park also needed attention. Virginia Master Naturalists worked with Fluvanna’s Parks & Rec office to develop a plan for the stewardship of the natural resources at nice Grove Park. One of our 1st efforts was to get approval for a renaturalization of nearly 50 acres of parkland that had been farm fields but were now being mowed. (vmn-rivanna.org)

Because MARSB has less financial support in 2014, at least going into the year, we could support our supporters that have attended a seed collection workshop to get out there more than ever to scout for plant populations that are suited for collection and volunteer to make some collections for MARSB. We’re more than happy to help in helping find out particular species and if populations are big enough for a collection. We may also send volunteers any supplies required to make these collections. Contact Clara as early as possible if you’re interested in helping in the seed collection efforts for 2014. (marsb.org)
