May be productive on the Hiwassee River throughout summer. The striper run typically starts in mid June and can last into September. Every year is a little different. The trigger for the run looks to be post spawn for the fish when the water temperature in the major arm of the Tennessee River starts to warm. Where the fish may be found at any given time depends on the water temperature, flow rates, dissolved oxygen levels, and other factors that we can only guess about. The stripers may be found in one place today, then gone tomorrow. Once the stripers arrive in the upper part of the river, we can typically find them till they leave the river. Rivers below dams are usually called tailwaters or tailraces. Many hydropower and flood control dams operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority and U. S. Army Corps of Engineers release cold water into the tailwaters. The cold water eliminated the habitat for native fishes, so the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service and TWRA stock trout to offer a fishery. These fisheries are maintained by stocking adult trout from spring through fall with most of the fish being stocked throughout the spring and summer. Fingerling trout are stocked at many of the tailwaters. In 2001 we stocked 1. 3 million trout into tailwaters. (tn.gov)
. TU is a national organization whose mission is to conserve, protect, and restore coldwater fisheries and their watersheds. The homewaters of our chapter is the Apalachia Tailwater part of the Hiwassee River. Yearly we partake in a range of actions in support of the fishery, like river cleanups, bug samplings, youth and adult education, and advocacy meetings with management agencies. (Click for more info)
Les Kirk said, TWRA has historically been trout hatchery oriented and ‘return to creel’ was the main measure of the success of the trout program. Gimmick fisheries like delayed harvest are well-liked with them and delayed harvest is trendy in the Southeast these days. I favor the chance to take pleasure in a quality, wild. Or at least naturalized. Fishery over a ‘put and take’, greatly fake one. If the stream can not grow something, do not pretend it can. (chattanoogan.com)
The Hiwassee scenic River in Reliance, Tennessee is a tailrace fishery. The constant water temperatures supply for year-round trout fishing. The Hiwassee tailwater begins in the Cherokee National Forest as it goes from TVA s Appalachia Powerhouse. This part is about 21 miles long. The scenery on the river is unparalleled, as it was the 1st river in Tennessee to be recognized as a State Scenic River. (orvis.com)
Throughout the October, the big caddisfly called the Great Autumn Brown Sedge will hatch some big meals for the trout. The October Caddisfly will hatch for a short period starting in October also. The bi-broodal Blue Winged Olives will start hatching in September and continue through November. Also, in November the Winter Stonefly will start hatching the hatch will last into and possibly through December, a range of Midges will hatch during the complete year. Good imitations of their nymphs in size #20 and #22 will be efficient when fished down low. (troutprostore.com)

SOON AFTER THE SOUTHERN APPALACHIANS HAVE LOST THE CRIMSON and yellow glow of autumn, tourists begin their mass exodus, leaving the countryside all but abandoned. But throughout those months when the most of our best trout fisheries are frozen in suspended animation, many waters below the Mason-Dixon line maintain fishable temperatures on all but the coldest days. There aren’t cars in the riverside pullouts and no new footprints in the sand on the hike upstream. When everyone else is leaving, hardy anglers know that some of the mountain South’s best trout fishing is just arriving. Mayflies, caddisflies, and the ubiquitous midges continue to hatch during the frigid season, keeping trout active and the winter angler’s vest a bit heavier with extra dry-fly boxes. (midcurrent.com)
At the headwaters of the Savannah River. They murdered the Muskogean leaders in their sleep. This precipitated a 40-year-long war between the Creek and the Cherokee. Caused by disunity among the Creek, the Cherokee were able to occupy the northeastern tip of what is Georgia, however then was part of South Carolina. They also drove the Muskogee and Yuchi from most of North Carolina west and south of the Hiwassee. Most of the branches of the Creek lost interest in this war after some years. (en.wikipedia.org)
With high water goes happening on many of our regions rivers, streamer fishing may be productive throughout our winter months. With all of the big hatches being over, our trout start looking for what s available. Shad, sculpins, daces, darters, and smaller trout all make up a part of a trout s winter diet. If it s small enough for a trout to eat, then it s on the menu. There are a couple of ways for people to fish streamer patterns. On high water I like to fish a heavier sinking line with a short and strong leader. Just beat the banks and put in the effort and you’ll move some fish. On low water conditions, I’ll typically stay with a weight forward floating line with a longer leader for a bit more separation between my line and the fly. (coastalanglermag.com)
