Last night, had a small taste of extreme conditions as we made a short but harrowing trip up to Blowing Rock in 40 mph winds and blizzard-like blowing snow. This morning, it was stated that there were 50-60 mph wind gusts in Boone and Blowing Rock, and up to 97 mph that is not a typo on Grandfather Mountain, where we were planning to hike. Needless to say, the hiking trip we planned was cancelled. When the storm moved out, blue skies shined over the snow-blanketed mountains. (abingdonoutdoors.com)

Next day, we broke camp quickly and headed northeast, jumping over to the next watershed, Whiteoak Flats Branch. A former homesite still has vestiges of fields in the real Whiteoak Flats, however below the flats, the stream cuts a steep gorge with more waterfalls. Leafless trees allowed us open views of all the trailside cascades. Our reward for making it to the lower reaches of Shelton Laurel Backcountry was a lung busting climb up Fork Ridge Trail. We ascended into fog and clouds and rejoined the Appalachian Trail, where a short jaunt brought us to Jerry Cabin Shelter. We parked end of the pond, backed up against a bunch of trees & underbrush for late afternoon shade. Well, that worked too well as our solar panels sitting over the Casita resting against the back of the awning housing were shaded also in late afternoon. But we realized at Quartzsite that we can hook up the pickup to the trailer batteries to charge them up since 1 it is faster & quieter than running our generator, & 2 we have not run our generator in a several years. The liniment cake mistake cured me of carelessness in cooking. Dyeing my hair cured me of vanity. I never think about my hair and nose now–at least, seldom. My favorite stadium is Montana State’s Bobcat Stadium. Because it is my alma mater and only about 12 miles from my house.
