Young families, armed with nothing more than basic gear and a packet of prawns or squid, take benefit of balmy winter days to fish the inner gutter. Most catch bit more than a couple of small whiting or bream, with some green toads thrown in, however it doesn t matter they still enjoy the experience. For many young anglers it’s a Hervey Bay giant sea-toad that gives them their 1st taste of a decent-sized fighting fish on the end of the line, these very toxic fish, with teeth like side-cutters, have to be dealt with carefully and returned to the water. Sadly, some anglers and I m not referring to the young families here think they’re doing the rest of us a favour by stabbing these unfortunate creatures to death, left to rot on the planks of the pier. Hervey Bay prides itself on the beautiful waters that are available here for fishing. There are many rules with fishing which have changed over the years to ensure that our marine life can keep reproducing the great fish that it does so people have years of enjoyment with fishing. If you ask your fishing expert on booking your chartered day away, they’ll be more than happy to instruct you on what the new fishing rules are and what size catches are available to bring home to the dry land after your day out. Caught my 1st ever tuna off that peir in the early nineties. It was a 16kg longtail and also got some mack tuna. I watched a young kid fight a big golden trevally for a while before it got taken by a shark. All that was left was the head and we estimated the fish about 12 or 13 kg. I don’t know about now but i could at least pack the 15 kg gear if you intend to live bait the end as the current is pretty strong also. Most guys used a cliff gaff or big grappling hook to bring fish up on to the peir. Best of luck Catta$. (fishnet.com.au)
Hervey Bay has close impoundment barramundi. This is the iconic sportsfish of Australia. These fish have grown up wild in an very beautiful freshwater environment. Close Lenthalls dam is a maize of meandering waterways with some number of hundred acres covered in Lilly pads and endless calm bays against a backdrop of wild Australian bush and wildlife. Separately from the prized barramundi, it’s abundant with native Australian Bass – a special little slugger that grows to 50cm and bigger and is perfect for flyfishing. If a barramundi and other Australian native freshwater species are on you fishing wish list – then Hervey Bay is the place to get them after you have chalked up a a range of the best saltwater sportsfish available anyplace in the world – just look at the pictures and come see it for yourself. The outer gutter is where most of the serious action takes place. Here, baitfish congregate around the jetty structures at all phases of the tide in the deeper water. Just about any of Hervey Bay s predators are probably to show up as they make forays into the schools of herrings and hardiheads. They include Spanish, broad-barred and Queensland school mackerel, queenfish, golden trevally, GT, mac and longtail tuna, and barramundi. Though there are some anglers using their favourite artificials for specific species, the favoured technique is to catch herrings or yellowtail pike on bait jigs keeping them alive in aerated buckets, then sending them out live on floating lines. At the northern end of Hervey Bay, past Fraser Island, is an area called the Breaksea Spit. On my 1st visit I went out with local guide Geoff Taylor on his 11. 5 m fly-bridge catamaran. Geoff runs live-aboard charters, which is just also as takes more than eight hours steaming from Urangan to get to Breaksea Spit. But, the sailing time is worth it. We sailed north past the Pelican Bank and Moon Point, across Platypus Bay to Rooney Point at the north-west end of Fraser Island, where we camped before taking the last leg. (About the topic)
Is home to a large range of birds like the famous Rainbow Lorikeet and Rosella Parrots. Visitors will be able to see Sea Eagles swooping and diving to catch fish from the water or hovering effortlessly over the beaches like kites in the wind. Point Vernon is home to some of the area’s Osprey nesting grounds. The Wildlife Reserve Society, established in Urangan, have a free booklet for bird watching places during the Bay. It’s a former deep-water, cargo-handling building first built to help the export of sugar, timber and coal. The pier, served by the expansion of the railway line from Pialba, was used for the move of cargo between rail and ships. It was built between 1913 and 1917, first to a length of 1107 metres. The pier was closed in 1985, and 239 metres of it was demolished. But, caused by public outcry, 868 metres of the pier was left, and the land was handed to the Hervey Bay City Council.
