Halibut Fishing During Grunion Run

Offer a challenge when wanting to target halibut. When you reach the beach find a high spot near the water s edge and look up and down the beach for signs of fish. Because surf fish congregate near regions of jumbled or foaming water look for small rip tides that form just off shore. Another area to target is offshore structure as well as holes, kelp beds and reefs. Once you spot these regions, cast your bait or tempt along the edge of a rip tide, structure or where rocks meet sand-this is where fish will be waiting to ambush bait. (fishthesurf.com)

Without question the most productive surf lures are hard baits whose color and size resembles baitfish. These lures are best cast out and retrieved with a slow, fast and also a stop/pause/go motion. They should be tied straight to your major line or onto a short uni to uni connected fluorocarbon leader. Most halibut move gradually so a fast retrieve may pass the fish by. Fish kill: Victor Gaus, watershed caretaker manager for the Sweetwater Authority, confirmed that Loveland Reservoir, which has a restricted shoreline fishing program, is closed caused by a fish kill. Gaus said the dead fish were discovered May 19, and the lake was closed. Signs have been posted since telling anglers to stay away. He said there was a small-level die-off, and out of caution, the fishing was closed till test results find out the reason for the kill. They favor open, sandy bottom, however are typically found near structure, like dropoffs or depressions—places that attract forage species. I continued to fish and spots with loose kelp but find a hole where there was minimal kelp. I worked this hole for the rest of the morning and got a good hit on a slow and steady retrieve. The fish gave some big head shakes now and felt hefty. I thought it may have been a legal halibut. It didn t give me any strong drag runs and I brought it to the skinny and thought it was a corbina. I got it to the sand and it was my 1st White Sea bass from the surf this year! My adrenaline was pumping and it was a decent size one. We make our way up the jetty and Peter tells James to stand on some rock. Peter has had good luck on this specific rock, the fish looks to stack up a little under it. James jumps on the rock, casts his LC out, retrieves gradually and gets a hit. James lets out a yell but the fish is not on just still, the fish turns back around and really slams his tempt. It makes a good run, peels his drag, then makes another long run. At 1st glance of the fish it seems really close to being legal. He gets it inside range for Peter to land it and he expertly applies the fish grip to it is mouth. We lay the measuring tape to it and it measures out at 22 inches! The next tip is to generally use high quality spins, leader material, and hooks. A ball bearing swivel between the Spectra and your leader will largely decrease line twists from spinning lures, bait, and bass. Generally use high quality monofilament leader material like Maxima or a co-polymers line like the Yozuri Hybrid; pure fluorocarbon line abrades too easily. Opposite to what many believe, I have never found halibut to be line shy and have been bitten off by their sharp teeth while using 25 pound line. Prime yellowtail regions are found around the Coronado Islands, La Jolla Kelp, the area between Oceanside and Dana Point, Horseshoe Kelp, Palos Verdes Peninsula, Santa Catalina Island and San Clemente Island. Most yellowtail taken by California anglers are landed on boats which anchor at spots where yellowtail are recognized to aggregate, then chum the fish to the ship with live anchovies. As the fish mill about the ship, anglers then use anchovies, mackerel or squid to catch them. Small boaters may take yellowtail by trolling jigs or feathers in regions where these fish happen. There was a time when Pacific sardines Sardinops caerulea were the most important fish taken by the commercial fisheries in California. It was one of the major baits used by pier fishermen. Then the fish almost disappeared most likely from a mix of over fishing and still as still undefined changes in the environment. Luckily the fish are back, or are coming back, and again they are available as bait. Sardines as bait are tougher than mackerel and do not soften as quickly when set out. But, I don’t feel they’re as good in general as mackerel in attracting fish since they are less oily. Still, they’re a top bait and should be used when anchovies and mackerel are unavailable, or when chasing some of the bigger species like sharks and rays. (kenjonesfishing.com)

For the past few days I have been fishing around the Bolsa Chica area and found quite some nice sized perch.   The yellowfin and spotfin haven’t been biting recently but it will not be long before they’re wanting to forage before the winter.   I like to use clams little neck, razor clams this time of year as that is what they’re eating.   You may notice the small bean clams at the beach at low tide and these beds are what surf fish are feeding on now.
