The Swains three sections the northern, center and southern sections. Charter operators out of Gladstone and Rosslyn Bay usually fish the southern and center sections, while Mackay boats tend to concentrate on the northern end. The easternmost edge gets fished only when the weather lets, and that is not too frequently, so you’d expect those reefs to still hold better populations of fish than the more available ones. On our recent trip we managed to fish the eastern edge for three and a half days. So while our fishing was not great, I assume it was most likely lots better than if we had fished the central parts of the reefs. (fishingmonthly.com.au)

The mouth of Calliope River, near the Wiggins Island, is worth a go as the bream have started to congregate around the mangrove banks. There’s a just bit of depth along the southern edges of the mouth. I like to bring the ship close into shore and flick into the mangroves. If the bream don t come out straight away, I chuck in some berley mixed with tuna oil. It widens like wild fire and typically initiates a strike. A cheap berley mix of tuna oil and chicken pellets is worth keeping in the ship. (fishingmonthly.net.au)
We travel to the outer reef and beyond up to 200 mile of shore we go to catching regions that may only get visited by 10 boats a year, the Norval has 3 tenders that are licensed to take 4 passengers so you may be able to explore the reefs and shoals all around the catching area, if snorkeling is your beloved, there are parts of reef that no person have ever seen just due to remoteness of were we go. All your catch is filleted or gut and gilled what ever your choice can be. The travel out to the fishing grounds is done throughout the night so as not to waste any fishing time, the captain will anchor in a place were you may be able to fish all night if that’s your choice also. I have received some enquiries and requests as to my thoughts on different parts of fishing the Swains and mid-ocean reefs so I have put together the following info which just covers most of the tackle and methods I use personally. It’s depending on my observations and experiences, having visited these reefs a number of times over the past 7 years. I’m sure there are enhancements and corrections that may be made and I expect to more refine these ideas at some point. (feverfeverfever.com)
More strangely, just after I had seen this photo and heard the story I dropped into my local chandlers to grab some things and noticed a ship sporting a near new four stroke with a heavily mangled stainless prop and no skeg at all. We got to chatting and I realised this was the same ship so I had a chance to check it all out up on the trailer. The motor was pretty sick, lower unit totalled and had seemingly run dry for some time and possibly overheated. The hull had really stood up amazingly well, it was towed back to land and didn t leak a drop, the keel seemed intact with just some denting on both sides and some remarkable scratches and gouges here and there.
