Expert snorkelers will appreciate the challenge of reaching the depths needed to view most of the remains of the USS Massachusetts. The 350-foot battleship saw action mainly throughout the Spanish-American War. It was sunk by the Navy off the Florida coast in 1921. It is a little over a mile out to sea near Pensacola Pass. The most of the wreck is lying in 25 feet of water, however part of the ship is exposed, making the site easy to find. Throughout low tide, gun turrets may be seen sticking out of the water. Marine life is plentiful around the ship. (traveltips.usatoday.com)
As many already know, the offshore charter fishing in the Florida panhandle is some of the best anywhere. Pensacola offers many offshore charters that seek a range of reef and bottom species. Snapper and grouper are the big draws but triggerfish, mackerel, jack, and many other species are waiting for the angler prepared to snag what they can. All of our charter captains are seasoned veterans and supply everything you need for a great day on the Gulf of Mexico. There are many reefs and hard bottom features in the neighborhood so that fishermen aren’t crowding each other. So bring your sunscreen and a big cooler and enjoy a day on the water. Next is Casino 2 located on the sound side or bay side of Pensacola Beach and titled Quite Water Beach. The right picture shows the pier. It expanded well off the shore line from the back side of Casino 2 and was a safe haven for kids, or anybody who didn’t swim well in the gulf surf. This, primarily, caused by it being and still is lots more shallow and no surf conditions. It’s also then and now a good place for kids to take pleasure in the beach in a safer environment. Covered picnic regions are located on the sound side and what locals refer to as Mommy s or Mom’s Beach and Baby Beach. (pensacolathenandnow.com)
Some hotels on the island offer bicycle rentals for their guests, however if you are not staying on the island, you will have to bring your bike. If you are taking the ECAT bus to the island, you may be able to bring your bike on one of their bicycle racks. A bicycle is a good way to get around the island quickly while taking time to see the sights and enjoy the sun. And if you get tired of cycling around, the free beach trolleys on the island are equipped with bike racks, so you may be able to give your legs a rest. For visitors to Fort Pickens, a bicycle is the next-best choice to renting a ship; you may be able to ride most of the seven miles to the fort along the broken road, though there’s a half-mile of sand you will have to walk across.
