Not really knowing what to expect, we loaded the ship with walleye gear on a Sunday afternoon and headed for Stanton, North Dakota, which was my 1st walleye excursion of the summer. The 1st thing I remember as we arrived at the Stanton ship Ramp was the number of dead cisco covering the shorelines and floating down the river. Hundreds, maybe thousands of dead fish…the smell is one that I’ll not soon forget. As we left the ship dock and throttled up river, I remember the warm sunshine and breeze blowing in my face… this is one part of fishing the Missouri River that I really had missed and a feeling that I look forward to yearly. While habitat conditions and forage abundance remain good, the quality of the Lake Sakakawea salmon fishery in 2013 is not known. Salmon stocked throughout the 2011 flood will be the dominant part of salmon available to anglers in 2013. But, it’s not known to what extent those young salmon were flushed through Garrison Dam. High entrainment of adult salmon was experienced in 2011, however fishing still proved good in 2012. Hopefully, that trend continues this year. (gf.nd.gov)
Man that heartbreaker particularly if you have a long drive. It was like the Dead Sea last Saturday. When the boy and I 1st got there, the water was the highest I have ever saw. Our spot was a good three feet under. We tooled around the area for a while and the horn sounded. The water dropped, we set up. And fished for eight hours, to get one bite on a crawler. The boy watched the crawler rod while I threw a crank. We swapped roles when he got bored. I was able to take pleasure in each of my three carefully spaced Moose Drools without interruption. The boy was happy for his extra sandwich and lots of snacks. (fishingbuddy.com)
While Lake Oahe was plagued with a predator/prey problem that has left the system full of small, hungry walleyes, Hendrickson says the inhabitant walleyes in the Garrison tailrace look good. ‘The walleyes that come up from Oahe and the river part of the system near Bismarck are showing lower weights and sizes. But smelt have never been as big of a factor in the extreme upper reaches of the system as they’re in the southern two-thirds. Tailrace walleyes mainly feed on abundant white suckers and other forage as well as perch, crappies, minnows and white bass, there are lots of smelt coming through the dam from Lake Sakakawea and they are quickly gobbled down also, so the fish are in good form. That was a night I’ll never forget and the way to tackle this spot if you go. certainly don’t need a ship although as shorefishing looks to be just as well-liked. there’s lots of fishing going on here but we never found it to be crowded. People were arriving at 2 and 3 in the morning to set up and go fishing its really a cool place and with the cold water discharge there’s certainly a distinctive mixture and behavior of fish from what things are like at home. While I had heard about this fishery from time to time for its banner species it really took shorefisherman to put the whole picture together. (roughfish.com)
The Missouri is notorious for its changing bottom contour. The place of the major channel and the many sandbars changes on a regular basis and because the channel was in a specific place last spring doesn t mean it’ll be this spring. The old saying it s not a matter of if, however when applies here. If you fish enough you’re going to hit something. I know some friends who have gone a little too fast and ended up high and dry on a sandbar that was some inches below the water. Not such a big deal when you’re fishing out of a lightweight 16 footer but not much fun when you hang up a 21 foot deep bottom and have to literally dig out the ship. (nodakoutdoors.com)

I have posted before about my husband – a Minnesotan who became one of North Dakota’s biggest promoters because of the available and pretty fabulous hunting and fishing here. Well this man LOVES his Missouri River. it is no secret that this was the warmest winter on record in North Dakota. Most of the state had little to no snow all season and now the daytime highs have steadily been in the 50s, 60s and 70s from border-to-border. So what does that have to do with my dear hubby and fishing? As I was being informed of the ship ramps that have opened in Bismarck and Mandan he also reminded me that in some states, there is a season opener that is still weeks away. The Missouri River salmon fishery was largely influenced by high water in 2011, however recovered considerably in 2012, with exceptional salmon fishing on Lake Sakakawea during the year, with an abundance of quality fish harvested by anglers. Salmon fishing slowed somewhat in 2013 consequently of the 2011 flood. The most of salmon available in the 2013 run were from those smolts stocked throughout the 2011 flood, however high entrainment, or passage of those fish through Garrison Dam, probably resulted in the reduced salmon run the past year. My husband fishes on the Missouri River and Lake Sakagawea, among others. I'll ask him but I know he does no fly fishing. The other stuff in your post, I don t have clue but he may! I could assume the Little Missouri could be alike and that's through the Park. We like Walleye up for here fishing and throw lots of other stuff back ie in the Red River on the East we have tons of catfish, the Texans in my family cringe when we say we don't want to catch those ugly things .
