As flounder come in from the Gulf at Rollover, they’ll migrate through the pass and into the marsh along the upper end of the bay. Finding flounder in that marsh is easy. I typically look for baitfish in the shallows. But another good choice is to fish the mouths of canals and drainages linking one marsh estuary to another. Flounder spawn offshore in waters between 30-66 meters 98-217 feet deep when they reach 2 years of age. Young flounder that don’t migrate to the Gulf, use up the winter in deep holes and channels. Each female can spawn up to 13 times a season and can create around 29, 000 eggs per spawn. Females release their eggs into the currents and the males then fertilize the eggs. After the eggs hatch, flounder larvae are symmetrical with their eyes on both sides of their body. As the flounder grows in size the right eye migrates to the left side of its head. I’ve been out to Christmas Bay 3 times in the past couple weeks and its generally active and its exactly the kind of hole I’ve been looking for since moving to Houston 2 years ago, unfortunately I haven’t done too well on the catching side. Just some rat reds and small specks, however no keepers but a big, easily tag red did swim inside some feet of me in about 30 inches of water. So am I supposed to be fishing the really shallow grass? Or wading deeper and trying to work the dropoff? Maybe fishing near the crab traps? And what baits am I supposed to be trying? Live baits in the shallow grass just have been digging in and hiding and making a mess of themselves, I’m thinking topwaters or shad assassins now but I could like to get them weedless. Many anglers legal-sized game fish from the bank, and I believe a big reason for this is their choice of bait. Dead shrimp is by far the simplest bait to get, and it’ll catch everything, however that’s the problem. It catches hardheads, small croakers, sand trout and lots of undesirables. To get to the Hole in the Bay you make your 1st right, west of the Point Lookout Bridge, into Sea Dog Creek. Staying between the buoy markers make you 1st left past the grass island on you’re left Long Meadow Island and hug the edge. This will put you in a stretch of water some feet deep. This little channel extends along the edge of this grass island on the left a bit more than half the island’ length. About halfway down this little cut, turn to the starboard and cut across. This should put you at the beginning edge of the Hole in the Bay. The depths here range between three feet at the southern end to about five or six feet based on the tide, at the northern edge.
