February is beginning of our yearly Galveston Jetty Drum Run, which will include big Drum that can surpass 25 pounds! Black Drum are easy to catch and gather in schools of fish reaching the hundreds. In spite of the name, adult black drum are not frequently black. Adult drum caught near the Gulf waters are usually a muted silver-gray. Big drum caught from the bays have dull brass or bronze tints on their backs and sides. In Texas, the autumn migration of southern flounder begins in October and peaks in November. Illustrative of how susceptible the flatfish are throughout the migration, which draws tens of thousands of anglers to the coast, about 60 of the flounder caught by Texas anglers over a calendar year are landed between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31. And most of them – as much as 25 or more of the yearly catch – were taken throughout the 30 days of November. (chron.com)

CANYON LAKE: Water murky; 71-75 degrees; 0. 10 feet high. Black bass are good on white spinnerbaits, watermelon Scoundrel worms, and Texas rigged 6-inch pumpkinseed worms in 15-25 feet. Striped bass are just jigging 1oz. Pirk Minnows and trolling crankbaits at daylight. White bass are slow. Smallmouth bass are just on pumpkinseed JDC grubs and watermelon Curb’s jigs in 15-30 feet. Crappie are just on minnows and blue tube jigs upriver. Channel catfish are slow. Yellow and blue catfish are good on trotlines and juglines baited with live goldfish and perch. Many anglers complain of rarely catching legal-sized game fish from the bank, and I believe a big reason for this is their choice of bait. Dead shrimp is by far the simplest bait to get, and it’ll catch everything, however that’s the problem. It catches hardheads, small croakers, sand trout and lots of undesirables. My advice is to bring one rod rigged with dead shrimp let kids use it if they’re fishing and use just the croaker, sand trout and piggy perch you may catch as live or cut bait. (fishgame.com)

I thought I can get on fish in here. I walked a short trail through the brush and hit the shoreline. It was busy, however there was lots of space between anglers so I started stripping fly line and headed in. Red and white clouser and intermediate line and I went to work. And it was work. Wind full on in the face was killing my cast, dumping it about 25 feet in front of me. Worked all angles, paralleling the shore, towards the shore, out deeper, behind the back. All I got was humorous looks from spincasters chunking different colored GULPs and plastics. Then they d hook up. (texasflycaster.com)

Conditions differ from year to year and place to place along the coast, Trial says. No two years are exactly alike, however you may be able to rely on some generalities about coastal fishing. The redfish spawn offshore and their young will move into the bays. When they get old enough, they, too, will migrate offshore. When you catch a legal redfish it’s going to be a juvenile. Redfish also will gather in great spawning aggregations along the gulf shoreline. These schools move up and down the beach. Trout don’t migrate much. They tend to hang around where they were born. The charm of Galveston’s storied past lives on as you drive down Broadway and gaze at the historic mansions that have weathered so many storms. Reports of damage from the last one — Rita — were exaggerated, and comparatively little damage was inflicted on the historic Strand district, which was the heart of Galveston in the late 1800s when the island city was considered the ‘New York of Texas. Colin and I took a trip with Capt. Eddie Garcia from Gar King’s Fishing Guides and boy did we have fun. We started out from the Galveston Yacht basin heading out to Galveston Bay to attempt and hook up some Bull Reds that are running now. Didn t have much luck and came back in to the bay near Sea Wolf Park to attack some Flounders. We moved around and found a good place where flounder were biting on fake. White Berkley Grubs and Gulp worked the best and kept 3, 14 to 15 flounders. We then moved back out to the bay to retry on some bulls and shark. Ended up with some bites here and there, then I hooked a nice 4 pound Gafftop not the most good looking fish in the sea and Colin hooked into a nice 40 Bull Red. (thesaltytexan.wordpress.com)

‘Spot continue to be caught at Cherry Point, off Gwynn Island in 25-30 feet of water and at the Spike #3 Rappahannock marker and at Butlers Hole. Lots of Spanish are available along the drop off at Windmill Bar and there have been good numbers of fish caught near R2 and southward towards Wolf Trap. Spanish bite best at 6-8 knots as shown on the GPS. Slower speeds produce bluefish/ Flounder season reopened with fishing slower than it was when the season closed. though there were 13 citations registered this weekend, the fish were hard to find. Our citations include 8 caught throughout the Mathews Boys and Girls Club Flounder Tournament on Saturday August 2d. (laterallineco.com)

Minimal interest throughout the past week with the heavy rains, however the best fishing is found from the banks with salmon eggs, nightcrawlers, or trout dough bait from Fleming Meadows or Blue Oaks. Few trollers are working the lake now, with most Motherlode fishermen aiming at close New Melones or Lake Camanche. Shad-patterned lures coated with Pro-Cure gels behind side planers or with a long setback should be efficient. The bass bite continued to be slow with the best action on live minnows from the shorelines. The Flemings Meadow Launch Ramp is still a viable choice for launching, and the Marina is still in the water. (sacbee.com)
