This reservoir, set in rugged surroundings in the heart of the Mournes near the supply of the River Bann, supplies water to the Portadown and Banbridge regions. Opened for fishing to Department permit holders for the 1st time in 1971, it has proved well-liked – especially throughout the summer months but anglers should dress properly as the weather may change. This lough hasn’t been stocked for some years. It has a hard fighting stock of small wild trout and is operated as a wild hill lough fishery. Flooding was a problem in this area and floodgates were fitted 1745, 1802 and 1934 near the Quoile Bridge. But, by the 1950 s flooding in Downpatrick was again serious. The problem was solved in 1957 when a new tidal barrier was built 2 miles downstream at Hare Island, creating the Quoile Pondage. This produced an area where floodwater can gather carefully before being discharged into Strangford Lough at low tide. Soon after the barrier was built, plants started to grow on the former seashore as the environment changed from that of a marine one to a freshwater one. 1st grasses, then bushes and sooner or later trees arrived as natural succession progressed creating the wildlife rich reserve you see today. Much to the annoyance and after a heated argument with 3 FN’s who arrived with the lidl rods and trebles for the pike. I have to learn to not wind them up in future but it was humorous after one of them started casting into my swim and I asked him to move on and got what I suspect was a mouthful of abuse from him to his mates. Still they did one after I snapped his rod after his forth cast at my gear and made the steering lock out of my car to show I was not for letting it go.    . (fishingposts.com)

Quoile Castle is believed to have been built around 1600 and to have been related with the West family. It has three floors below the attic and good barrel vaulting which wicker centering on the ground floor. Built on estuarine mud, the south-east angle sooner or later collapsed but was conserved in its present state since the 1980 s.
