The Barclay for a new 60-space parking lot on the south side of the river off path 13 to increase fishing opportunities on the DSR, especially throughout high water situations. The application was tentatively accepted by the Town of Richland Planning Board, pending approval by the state Department of Transportation because the entrance and exit to the lot is on a turn. DOT approval hasn’t been given now, said John Howland, the town’s zoning and code officer. (syracuse.com)
We didn’t have any anglers fish the run today. We’ll make sure to post a fishing update as early as we get new info on the conditions. As for weather conditions, we don t have snow on the ground, goes at the dam have been lowered to 1750cfs and there’s restricted precipitation forecasted for the next 5 days so we’re hopeful the goes will continue to drop. Feel free to call ahead if your thinking of coming up, were happy to give up to the minute reports on conditions. (facebook.com)
The Salmon River is without a doubt, the most famous salmon and steelhead river in the complete northeast. The salmon river is hydro electrically controlled and the water levels can differ depending on rainfall, snow melt or drought. There’s 13 miles of public access and 2 miles of privately controlled access where anglers can buy a daily access pass. Labor Day weekend signals the start of salmon season. (orvis.com)
A well thought out review. In 2015 the dsr is restructuring its fee schedule. Much was written about the 75 its going to cost at peak season. But I have been concentrating on the rest of the year and am optimistic about the half day alternatives particularly in the winter. Last year we were shut out some days because of slush in the morning but to have the choice of popping in to the DSR for the afternoon, I can't wait. And price drop for steelhead season is a welcome change. The salmon crowd can have it throughout October. I'll see you after Christmas. (therustyspinner.blogspot.com)
Above the Wire Holes is the School House Pool, which is in the town of Altmar. This is a well-liked area and is the last big pool for turn casters. There are two dirt parking lots which supply access to the School House Pool. One lot is on the south side of the river at the beginning of the fly fishing only part right at the end of Pulaski Street in Altmar. As you go south on path 13 past the parking lot for the Trestle Pool, bear left onto Pulaski Street to its end. This parking lot will be in front of you on Bridge Street. This is lots from which many drift boats launch . From this lot, walk across Bridge Street and along the paths on the south side of the river. (fishsalmonriver.com)
If you need a river trip I do have some prime dates still open but they’re filling up fast. If you have a date you want call now. If I’m not available I have a great network of guides I work with and I’ll get you on the water. Majority of people are wondering how this season will be after the tough season we saw last year. I can not promise anything but judging by the way the lake is fishing I think it’s going to be a good year. Last year now the lake guys were having lots of trouble locating fish and that isn’t the case this year. (guidewayneo.com)
Tony Scime at Scime s Tackle says that some bass and walleye have been coming from the head of Strawberry Island on a consistent base. Worm harnesses work best for the eyes and will also catch an sporadic bass. The head of the river was a good place for walleye and bass, too. Shore casters are picking up bass, perch, silver bass and sheepshead closer to Buffalo. Crayfish is generally good bait from shore or ship, however worms and minnows work, also. In the Erie Canal, fish are available. It s just a question of trying to figure out where and when. Kristen Heffernan of North Tonawanda was trolling a Challenger stickbait last weekend to take a nice six pound walleye on the outside of a weedbed near the Robinson Road bridge. (onthewater.com)
The lower Salmon River is beautiful, especially in the DSR. One of the best parts about the DSR is since it’s all private property, the number of anglers allowed on the property is constrained each day. Another nice part of the Douglaston Salmon Run is the fact that there’s totally no drinking and people who come to the river know that if they misbehave, they may be asked to leave. Consequently, there are few fights or impolite people fueled by booze, which may sound weird to lots of trout guys who get pissy if they see another angler in the six hours they’re fishing, however the salmon streams up north, especially the upper Salmon River, are recognized for shoulder to shoulder combat fishing and not so fish friendly practices. If you recurrent this web site you most likely know I love Google maps. Google maps are a good way to scout new fishing places if they’re well recognized fisheries like the famous Salmon River. Using the ‘Satellite’ and ‘Terrain’ buttons in the upper right-hand corner and the navigation buttons in the upper left-hand corner of the map let you to view satellite imagery and USGS style topo-maps of the area and to zoom in to see amazing detail, as well as places to park and trails to the river. You may also grab Peg-Man the little orange dude in the upper left-hand corner and drag him around the map to enter Streetview where you may be able to see real photographs taken along any of the roads that are light up in blue I know I have to make a video to show you how to use this Google Map . Thousands of salmon attract thousands of anglers, particularly on the weekends in October. The Salmon River offers 13 miles of public fishing water but the 1st two miles above the lake are privately owned. To avoid the crowds of anglers on the public water, we fished for two days in the private waters of the Douglaston Salmon Run. The DSR charges a daily rod fee of $50 per angler and they let kids under the era of 16 to fish free with a paying adult. The DSR limitations the number of anglers that it lets on their property each day so we purchase the passes on-line previous to our departure from Frederick because they’ll sell out on weekends.
