Fishing Report Pinewood Reservoir

DIFFICULTY: Easy. The reservoir borders/will include the Ramsay-Shockley Open Space, which is a small area to the North and West of the lake. There’s a average loop about 4 miles long that travels near the water’s edge on one side and adventures up some hills on the other. The maps aren’t terribly clear and there are lots of false trails near the Fisherman’s cove area since it’s where lots of people access the water, so pay attention. Pinewood Reservoir is my personal favorite of the three. It is more secluded and has beautiful views on the drive up from Carter Lake and Flatiron Reservoir. The reservoir covers 100 acres and the bordering open space lands cover 327 acres. Tent camping, fishing, and no-wake boating are allowed. The 2. 6 mile Besant Point Trail encircles the lake while the 1. 5 mile Shoshone Trail gives a nice loop hike along the ridge with excellent views of the reservoir and bordering mountains. Fisherman’s Cove is a nice relaxing spot, just accross the dam, where water rushes into the reservoir from under the mountain. (theroaddogblog.com)

– Water easy to access in all regions. The fish aren’t big in this area, however an plentiful supply of Browns and Rainbows live in these cold waters. Public access is available in the town of Lyons with the best regions being Meadow Park and below the rock quarry. Fish pocket waters and deep pools for consistent strikes. Monday yielded 15-18 fish with the most success on a dry/dropper rig of standard flies like copper johns, pheasant tails, and elk wing caddis. Some number of stoneflies have been spotted and the trout are eating small imitations of these. The dry fly fishing should really pick up previous to run off. (greeleygazette.com)

Coot Pond this pond was stocked with trout five weeks ago with rainbow trout, and anglers are having success with scented bait and worms. Trout activity is high in the cooler hours of the morning and evening but slows down considerably in the heat of the day. It looks this pond is holding more fish because it’s a bigger water body and is less available to the public. Daily bound for trout is four per person per day with a ownership bound of eight. I have seen anglers pull catfish and walleye out of here on occasion. (coloradoan.com)

Stagecoach Reservoir—The water level at the tailwaters was fluctuating and the reservoir is spilling over the dam. RS2’s, zebra midges, ants, and barr emergers have been working well for fly fishing. The redds are down and fenced for protection so be aware of footing and stay off the beds. Stagecoach State Park asks anglers at the tailwaters to be aware of overcrowding on the river. Pike activity has picking up with warming water temperatures around 60 degrees. Rainbow trout have been hitting on brightly colored power bait, kastmasters, and rooster tails. Primarily stocker size trout around 13′ have been landed with some reports of 4-6 lb trout. (gjsentinel.com)

Gunnison River Upper from Almont to Blue Mesa goes are 443 cfs in Almont and 567 cfs in Gunnison. Anglers floating the river have had the most success since they can cover more water, with lots of sizeable brown trout and some rainbows. Warm temperatures have really awakened the fish and should start the yearly migration of big rainbow spawners soon out of Blue Mesa Reservoir. Hatches include stoneflies, caddis, midges and mayflies. Best methods have been nymphing stones and attractors or throwing streamers. Tempt casters have been doing well with 3/16-oz spinners and Marabou jigs. The fire rings at Flatirons Reservoir are big, with good vent holes along the bottom. They’re a little tall but that shouldn t be an issue at this low elevation campground. It doesn t get as cold here as it does at the higher elevations. The fire rings do have two grates which you typically don t see on most fire rings. It s nice to be able to flip both over to cook or to be sure your fire stays inside of the ring. But, you may want to wrap some reflective aluminum foil on the outer edges when the grates are open. This may assist you notice them in the black and keep you from bashing your shins. (campoutcolorado.com)

Is a geological landmark on the western edge of Loveland just off Highway 34. Added to the county’s open space in the fall of 1999, the Devil’s Backbone offers 4. 9 miles of trail, as well as a 3. 5-mile loop trail for hiking and running, plus 15. 1 miles of connecting trail to Lory State Park. Featuring towering rock formations, it’s an ideal place to view wildlife. Both the Colorado Cooperative Agreement and the Windy Gap Firming Project Intergovernmental Agreement have been hailed as models of cooperation. In the meantime, East Slope West Slope tensions continue to mount over how the Colorado Water Plan, now under development, should address the possibility of extra diversions of water from the West Slope to meet growing urban demands on the Front Range. These agreements show that such tensions may be overcome, however also that it may take more time than allowed by the 2015 deadline Gov.
