1st of all, we all know how fast fishing conditions can change.   A hot bite one day will frequently lead to a cold bite the next.   Not to talk about the fact that in the delta fish are constantly on the move and are most probably miles away by the next day anyway.   Striped Bass, as an example, travel an average of eight miles a day. With that in mind, there are some general places in the delta that typically hold fish.   I typically attempt to avoid the fleet of boats and fish in more secluded places.   Guess what – I still catch lots of fish.   Look at where all of the boats are fishing and now look at a map. CONTRA LOMA: Contra Costa Water District has lowered reservoir to do vegetation management and install gauge that will supply building with more correct elevation readings. Level is down about 7-8 feet. Trout fishing was good. Attempt using range of Power Baits or nightcrawlers at ship ramp area or near Swim Lagoon. Catfish bite is strong. For ship fishing, it is also tough, however it’s much better than from fishing from shore. In Cache Slough, you may be able to see the water current changes its directions throughout the tide changes. This is the better time to see a good sturgeon bite. The recent plants and colder water have turned on the bite. Rainbow glitter Power Bait, marshmallow/night crawler mixes, Kastmasters or Roostertails are all working from the banks at Glory Hole Point, Angels Cove and under the Highway 49 bridge. There’s easy access to the bank spots. The troll bite should also be good with sideplaners hugging the shorelines. Bass fishing is just with anglers catching and releasing many spotted bass in the 1- to 2-pound range with some bigger fish to 5 pounds found from 5 to 50 feet in depth with Carolina-rigged or split-shot crawdad-patterned plastics or greenpumpkin Zoom Baby Brush Hawgs in the creek beds. CAMANCHE: Upriver trolling was productive with many boats catching near limitations. Steady river water has pulled the Trout from the lower lake up to the Penn Mine and the Narrows. Bait fishing is productive 25 to 40 feet deep at Dike #3, the north shore day use and the south shore low water ramp area. Trout Pond action is beginning to pick up with biweekly plants under way and cooler temperatures bringing down water temp. Use Powerbait or Yum paired up with crawlers for bottom fishing and wooly booger or Kastmaster for top action. LAKE OROVILLE-The lake is at 80- capacity. There lake is full of debris and boaters have to use extreme caution while running! Bass fishing was pretty good for those anglers who find the right area. A Yuba City Bass Busters local charity fund-raiser tournament held this past Saturday was won with 14. 93 pounds, as well as the big fish, a 3. 80-pound spot. SAN PABLO RESERVOIR: The bass bite is good and trout trollers are to get bass 13 feet below the surface. A 9-pound bass was caught and released from the shore near the Pines with a swimbait by Mohammed Ejaz of Castro Valley. An 11. 9-pound cat landed by Zino Valdez of Vallejo was the biggest of that species landed last week. Catfish bite is good along the shore from the Pines to the dam.
