BEWARE: beware of the guys in the street selling ship charters. If you wait till the day you’re fishing and go to the dock where your ship is many times people will mislead you to another ship or dock trying to put you on a ship that wasn’t meant for you. You have to have a person guide you to your ship, who is from a reputable charter company. This way there’s no misunderstanding or misleading. Remember when renting Sport fishing boats in Cabo that you rent your ship from reputable and established business. Walk into a fishing fleet office and ask questions about what you’re to get and what are the costs? You do not want to rent boats from vendors in the streets and you don’t want to book through shady websites offering you the world. (jcsportfishing.com)
Lots of the fishing charter businesses in Cabo San Lucas publish a weekly fish report. This is a great tool for those who are about to go and fish in the Los Cabos area. The guys in San Jose Del Cabo and Los Barrilles publish reports also, however there you will not have any trouble, as the number of reports is reasonable. In Cabo, you’ll have to focus it down for yourself. There are so many to decide from, so listed below are the major ones. Have a read, find the ones you like, and start to get to know the Cabo water. So, what do we expect to see for the rest of the year? Loads of big fish with an ever-rising number of dorado, wahoo and big, big yellowfin tuna – just in time for tourmanent season! With water temps holding in the mid to high 80’s and a good amount of bait, we expect this year to be a banner for the Bisbee’s, WON Tuna Jackpot and Los Cabos Billfish tourneys. If you are wanting to get into a tournament and need a ship to charter, we still have a ship or two available as of September first. But act fast. They will not be available much longer. (pochos.com)
A nice rooster off the beach in San Jose where I told him to go and he hooked up. On the pacific side they’re finding roosters, jacks, and some Sierra along the beach and inshore. Off shore the dorado bite is decent. When you hook a single fish keep it in the water and be patient . Most if not most of the time there will be others that will show up. The marlin bite is just and will get better as fish from the north continue to migrate down south. Mag Bay – the marlin are showing a little better than a week ago, however the prime fishing is still running late and not quite in full swing still. (orvis.com)
BILLFISH: Early in this reporting period the Striped Marlin bite was really, really good and nearly everyone that wanted to catch one had a positive experience. It got better after the passing of Hurricane Sandra, and it was good since the Mackerel arrived. After the storm passed, boats going out were releasing between three and six per day, usually on the Pacific side or directly south. They were found everywhere, however the concentrations were along the 1-3 mile range off the beach. Look for the bait on the depth sounder and you could find the fish. Many of the fish caught were hooked by casting live bait in front of tailing fish, some by dropping a live bait back into the trolling pattern when a Marlin showed up in the tempt pattern. Just want to tell you what a spectacular time we had in Cabo! Highlights were fishing -we each caught a 30-40 pound tuna! – with Pocho’s charters. greatly recommend them. They prepared dinner at Pocho’s restaurant that night- sashimi and grilled tuna. Great. We also had dinner at Pedregal- Capella- what an amazing dining setting! We also sailed on the America’s cup racing boats one afternoon. Weather was great. The Villa was SOOO nice! thanks for helping make all this possible. We could certainly think about doing it again! BILLFISH: Marlin fishing was hit and miss. The regions that are producing are up on the Pacific side, however it was tough to catch them. At the beginning of the week it was pretty good in the regions of the 1150 and the 95 spots as we were catching good numbers of fish on live bait and ballyhoo. Then the fish seemed to have moved to the Pacific up and around Rancho Migrino. So it was unpredictable as to where we’re going to find the fish, however lucky for us, we don t have to go for most of a ship ride to run into great fishing, because we’re in Cabo. Lucky Us!!. A normal year here in Los Cabos has the striped marlin moving away from our shores and the average water temps of 75 degrees in search of warmer water and an abundance of bait fish. That scenario is what we have seen happening in the last two weeks of 2014. Now that does not mean that they’re gone completely, in fact, previous to some a lull in striper action these past couple of weeks, striped marlin were the number one catch on the most of charters. We are still finding them, just not as frequently nor in the numbers seen at the beginning of December. When the water gets colder and greener striped marlin move lower in the water column. When picking a charter ship at Cabo San Lucas, you typically get what you pay for. All other things being equal, the more costly boats are bigger, faster, and better able to get you fish if the water’s a little rough or if the fish concentrations are located far from port throughout your vacation time slot. On the other hand, the humble pangas with their Mexican panguero captain can catch you anything caught by a cruiser, when conditions are right. These amazing artisanal fishermen in their amazing boats have caught giant marlin almost 1, 000 pounds in weight, if you need an Ernest Hemingway "Old Man and the Sea" adventure, this is your spot.
