. This wooded setting is home to one of the finest collections of original pioneer log cabins in the Northwest. These eleven log cabins, built by the early pioneers of the region, sat alone in the early forests and rough clearings. To save them from destruction, they were moved to Ferndale from different places to this site beside the Nooksack River. The public may view and tour these historic buildings in a village setting. These buildings and cabins are over 100 years old and show vividly the strength and motivation of the pioneer settlers, who carved a new life in the West. (lyndahinton.com)
Bellingham is a conglomerate city. Historically four separate communities founded in the early 1850s, it was incorporated in 1903 as Bellingham for Sir George Bellingham, after whom Capt. George Vancouver named its bay in the late 18th century. Of the original villages, only the southernmost, Fairhaven, really keeps a separate identity. Recently gentrified, the neighborhood is well-liked among college students. Its buildings include the southern terminus of the Alaska Marine Highway System, that state s ferry network.
