First Fork Sinnemahoning Fly Fishing

We managed to hold onto a decent amount of ice through last week’s warmup. Lakes lost some inches, and edges softened; but people were fishing all weekend on Hamilton, Beechwood, and Hills Creek. This week’s cold weather will assist improve ice conditions largely. Now, there are thin spots on all of the lakes! it’s fishable; but anglers should still be extra cautious.  With this week’s snow, it’s going to hide some of these thin spots also. Sinnemahoning State Park, located near the center of the Pennsylvania Wilds’ scenic steep valleys region, encompasses 1, 910 acres of beautiful scenery and remaining wildlife habitat. Situated in Cameron and Potter counties, the park is nestled between the green-shouldered ridges of Pennsylvania’s Elk and Susquehannock State Forests. The park is long and narrow and will include lands on both sides of 1st Fork Sinnemahoning Creek, a big tributary to the Sinnemahoning Creek. The East lies completely inside Potter County, PA. East Fork Sinnemahoning Creek goes roughly 15 miles southwest to its confluence with the 1st Fork Sinnemahoning Creek. The monitoring station along the East Fork Sinnemahoning Creek is roughly six miles northeast of the confluence with the 1st Fork Sinnemahoning Creek in Susquehannock State Forest near Logue, PA. Mark Black Moshannon is great creek. I grew up about 1 mile away and have been on it with a fly rod for 42 years beginning at age 8. Opposite to what I read on these blogs the stream has an excellent holdover rate. Yes it’s different that sinemahoning. The best dry fly you may be able to use on that stream could be a Royalwullf with non white rear in size 10 or 12. You’ll find the trout nearly generally near the edge so when casting to the far side you have to work it in as close as a foot from the edge. There are so many good stretches I would not know which one to pick but a typically good producer is the stretch from the I-80 bridges up to violet ray camp. (centralpaflyfishing.wordpress.com)

Walt, I am a recent change to Rivertop Rambles through Southern Tier Fly Fisher and I am enjoying it muchly. I live ‘downstream’, on the mighty Allegheny in Warren County, and while there’s lots of natural beauty in this neck ‘o the woods, I am envious of your station atop the triple divide. Sadly enough, that s the last time I ever hit a Light Hendrickson hatch on 1st Fork at least one that heavy. I ve hit Light Hendrickson hatches on other streams, although, so I can t complain. I still fish 1st Fork at least some days at the end of April in hopes of duplicating that day long ago, however it looks there s generally something holding things back. For example, we experienced some number of drought years with low water. Other years, big rains wiped out the fishing while I was there. And still other years the hatch was occasional with only some fish increasing to the naturals. (paoutdoorjournal.com)

– Water levels on the river are up and down. Boaters using the Shenango River Water Trail can still enjoy the trail with the changing foliage. Make use of the new ship launch in the Village of Hamburg. The Shenango River Watchers have done an remaining job access to the river at this place. The river will be stocked with trout below the Shenango Reservoir outflow. This area is chosen as a year round trout fishery, so a current trout/salmon stamp is needed to fish the area from the outflow to the Walnut Street Bridge despite of species of fish that you’re aiming at or harvesting. Under the settlement, Norfolk Southern agreed to pay the Commonwealth $7. 35 million as restitution for environmental damages. The PFBC received $3. 675 million of the settlement and must use the money to develop and implement projects that benefit fishing, boating and aquatic resources in Cameron, Elk, McKean or Potter counties.
