The fishing itself was the best I have experienced with hard fighting rainbows and doubles being taken on the day. I know the lakes hold rainbows, browns and tigers all up to double figures, and that adds to the excitement knowing that the next pull on your line may be the fish of a lifetime. My second trip down this year saw the fish high in the water considering the somewhat coloured water. Heavy rainfall the night before saw the lake rise some inches and colour overnight, however the fish were still active and feeding. Through the earliest part of the day the fishing was tough, temperatures were still low and the fish quite stagnant for the time being. I managed to pick off some fish on my common single, weighted spider pattern. Simply dropping the fly in front of the fish and provoking a reaction. The match was fished on a point s base, so big fish weren’t so important; instead the idea was to find the most consistent youngster.   Each competitor drew their peg and when the whistle sounded at 10. 00am, they were off with 30 minutes to attempt and catch the maximum of 5 fish per peg.   Scoring was 2 points for the 1st fish on a peg, then 1 point for each extra fish.   The 1st 10 minutes were slow, however then all of a sudden rods started to bend all around the lake, with some of the boys agreeing one another fish for fish. The match was fished to full c&r which adds a touch of early pressure as any tie on fish number will revert back to time of 1st caught fish. Davey Parker was the fastest off the mark landing a fish 2 minutes after the start. Trevor Wadds was next in line followed by Fred B. Then Glen Appleby. Only 4 out of the fifteen rods landed a fish on the 1st peg. No anglers caught on the second. The 3rd move saw Howard Croston & Simon Robinson both land two fish, Howard then went on to land a more two fish from his 4th peg putting him ahead at lunch. 15 anglers landed a total of 19 fish before lunch.
