We drove from Toronto early that morning, to accomplish the appointed rendezvous time, and by 9:30 a. M, our canoe was launched, our safety gear organized, and our picnic protected from the sun. We were prepared to set off into the wilds of the wetlands. A guide had been suggested, however we felt confident in our levels of skill and experience, so passed on that choice. I was filled with trepidation due to warnings that people became lost in the swamp and been forced to use up the night out there. (Additional info)
The Minesing Wetlands previously portrayed as a swamp which seemed to infer some sort of stagnated buildup of water NOTHING may be more FROM THE TRUTH was recognized in 1996 by the RAMSAR conference of 1971 as one of only 2, 000 important wetlands in the world. It’s amazing that the world sees this jewel as important still our continued mal practices, land use or possibly best termed, abuse , neglect and lack of recognition over the years have sent this important feature into serious decline. A recent broad and provocative report by the NVCA 60 years of Forest Change in the Minesing Wetlands which describes this deterioration, was kept hidden in the minutes of one of the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority Board minutes meeting May 2014 by that board. In 1994, the factory moved away from nitroglycerine explosives production to water-established merchandise and this reduced the amount of land needed as a buffer. In September 2012 the way was clear to let the public access to this hidden gem, right in the heart of Johannesburg. The reserve is managed by the Endangered Wildlife Trust EWT working with Heartland, the property arm of land holders AECI and the Modderfontein Conservation Society. The EWT has made great progress removing the alien vegetation and monitoring the wildlife that occurs naturally in the reserve. The formal management of the reserve will ensure the eco-system balance, the safety of the area and that the public can enjoy it for recreation. (showme.co.za)
The widening of Birch Island Road from Harlan Drive to Kara Drive began APRI 19. The widening was prompted by the construction of the new subdivision Edenvale ne, Birch Island Villas which now occupies the former site of Al and Abby Picha’s 5 acre farmstead. As indicated by accepted plans, some trees were removed on the north side of the road; the side occupied by BIW Conservation Area and by the 4 acre parcel co-owned by two sets of holders see above . Till 3 years ago, most of Birch Island Road was what many considered to be an appealing, gravel road, one of the last unpaved streets in Eden Prairie; one that complemented the woods and Picha inheritance Farm; one that deterred speeding. Located in the Crocodile River valley, Vaalkop Dam enjoys light to hot summers but icy winters. Vaalkop dam boasts to being a top fishing destination. Fish species in the dam, like yellowfish and carp, are abundant making it the ideal fishing stop. Speak to some of the regulars at the dam to learn what the best bait is. Boating is constrained to particular regions of the dam, allowing visitors to reach the dam’s center island also as some of the especially good fishing spots. About 800 hectares of the water was assigned for water sports fans. Whilst fishing or playing in the waters you’re probably to spot some interesting wildlife as well as game species. From the levees of the Nottawasaga river we pushed out onto the frozen floodplains where the Great Blue Heron nesting site heronry is. As stated earlier this month we confirmed 8 nests. The decline in nests in the Minesing Wetlands may be attributed to declining forest cover less suited nesting sites and, as pointed out by our trip leaders, territory issues related to adjoining Bald Eagle nests. A nice 84-kilometre drive south of Perth along the shaded South Western Highway brings you to Pinjarra, picturesquely set on the Murray River. Predominantly a dairying, cattle-farming and timber-producing area, Pinjarra was once called the horse capital of Western Australia when horses were bred for the British Army in India. Today horseracing, walking and equestrian events are a big part of Pinjarra culture. The Alcoa Refinery north-east of town is the biggest alumina refinery in Australia. (exploreaustralia.net.au)
