Fly selection has not been tough when the water is right. Prince nymphs and zebra midges are working if you are a nympher. Hare’s ears natural, and pheasant tails are taking some fish. Caddis are popping off here and there but I would not go out looking for a dry fly day now. Terrestrials are most likely just around the corner so do not forget to pack some hoppers, flying ants, and beetles. If you see a fish chomping near the bank you better think about what is falling off of the tree above it and not what is hatching from the river. In south central Kentucky is one of the finest tailwater trout fisheries east of the Mississippi River. The tailwater begins at the foot of TVA s Wolf Creek Dam. Rainbow trout have some protection. All rainbow trout between 15 and 20 inches must be released. Five rainbow trout under 15 inches can be kept. Lots of anglers practice catch and release anyway, however these rules help advertise an remarkable fishery. Kentucky may not be the place to go if your wanting to catch a hundred fish in a day. The Nashville District of the U. S. On only her 10th cast there was a tremendous flash. My 1st impression was, ‘that is the biggest rainbow I have ever seen!’ She corrected me. ‘that is a brown! did not you see the big spots!?’ The reel kept humming as her fly line sizzled a rooster rear down the river. ‘there is backing! can not we go faster?’ By the time I managed to turn the trolling motor her reel was absent thirty yards of chartreuse backing, after about ten minutes the big fish rolled on the surface. ‘Striper!’ Three other stripers schooled around the hooked fish which was the baby of the bunch. Beginning in the west, the tailwater below Nolin River Lake Dam is the 1st of the hotspots, receiving over 16, 500 rainbow trout yearly. Though an angler could most likely catch fish along the eight-mile or so stretch below the dam, the best habitat exists in the upper 1. 5 miles closest to the dam. The water temperatures did drop about 2 degrees since last week but we’re still about 6-7 degrees above what we usually should be seeing this time in November. I have noticed some more schools of shad moving shallow but the bass are scattered and I have seen little in the way of schooling bass. Our most productive patterns still remain as going shallow early for some scattered top water bite, then fishing the flats with lipless crank baits, spinner baits and square billed crank baits when some active fish are present and if they aren’t active, we’re going to secondary points and channel banks with finesse jigs, tube jigs and Carolina rigged creature baits.
