With some of the coldest water temperatures of the year the key to catching fish this month is to fish slow. Anchoring up on holes will be your best bet for success. Fish will be schooled by size and most probably holding tight to deep water structure. It s more hard to find fish with your electronics because most fish will be tight to the bottom. Search for trophy cats in the deepest holes or depressions on the lake floor. Other key spots include the bases of deep bluff lines, channel bends, and the face of the dams on the upstream side. I like the VIE Shiner on my jig head, because it s a do-nothing bait. What makes this bait different is that it has a rear that points both up and down, whereas most crappie jigs and grubs have tails that either point up or point down. The rear part of this tempt also breaks toward the back, allowing the grub to mimic the swimming motion of a shad minnow. So, it gives off vibrations from the top of the rear and the bottom of the rear as it comes through the water. My favorite colors for this time of year are blue pearl, blue orange and black metal flake.
