Crappie Fishing Chickahominy River

Yellow perch, white perch, and black crappie all supply excellent fishing. Yellow perch may be found along the edges of grass beds, whereas crappie fishing is best around structure on steep channel drop-offs. Other species available to anglers include: chain pickerel, bowfin, blue catfish and channel catfish. ‘The crappie population in Beaverdam is usually focused around fish in the 9- to 11-inch range, ‘ he said. ‘The 2009 trap net survey revealed an abundant crappie population with the most of the fish collected from the northern 3rd of the reservoir. Anglers have been able to catch a just number of crappies in the 1. 5- to 2-pound range. The 2010 electrofishing survey of Beaverdam Swamp Reservoir showed smaller schools of crappies to be scattered in different places. POTOMAC RIVER – BELOW WOODROW WILSON BRIDGE – The major river is high and muddy. That means that there’s lots of debris floating or just somewhat submerged and care should be exercised to avoid it while boating. Bass are beginning to actively forage for food, wanting to fatten up before the spawn. They’ll be holding in deeper water bordering to sand or gravel banks, coming up on the flats to feed in the afternoon sun. Lipless, rattling crankbaits; small, tight wiggling crankbaits; small plastic baits and spinnerbaits should take the fish when they begin foraging. Crappie usually strike the jig as it drops after it hits the water. Let it sink and twitch it twice, and if nothing happens hit another opening. If the water is cooler or ultraclear, but, a live minnow is usually a better bet. These may be fished on a small gold hook or tipped onto a jig head. Lastly, think about not all lakes and rivers are good crappie fisheries. You have a much better chance of catching a saddlebag if you take some time to research where the biggest fish are caught. It’s a much clearer lake than Kerr, with fewer flooded trees, if you do manage to find a brush pile, it may well have crappies holding near it. Docks may also be good, especially when they extend into deep water. Use live minnows or small jigs with plastic tails. The best fishing is found in the upper lake in the Roanoke River arm most years. Expect the average crappie here to run 2/3 to 1 pound. (nvdaily.com)

The spring herring run was a tradition for many years at Walkers Dam. Unfortunately angler access to the dam is closed now – no fishing from the dam. This is because of continuing repairs, which will take years to finish. With closure of the dam, the river herring run continues to draw many anglers who fish in regions below the dam each spring from late March through early May. A nationally recognized largemouth bass fishery; upstream from Hopewell, largemouth fishing is best in old river channels and abandoned gravel pits; downstream from Hopewell to Hog Island, bass fishing is most productive in bigger tributary creeks and big expanses of vegetated tidal flats. The tidal James also gives the best fishing for blue catfish in the state, with hundreds of 30- to 60-pound fish caught yearly; good crappie fishing in oxbows upstream of Hopewell; and white perch during the river. Returning adult American shad from a stocking restoration program, with a healthy run of hickory shad, have produced a well-liked spring fishery inside the Fall Line from late March through early May. Red drum accounted for the 3rd highest number of Citations in 2014 and represented 18 of the year s total number.  The 925 red drum Citations in 2014 was a average reduction from the record setting year of 2013, when 995 trophy reds were registered, however still ranks as the second most productive year in the Program s history.   Red drum Citations became release only in 2000, and coincidently, that was the 1st time in Tournament history more than 500 Citation red drum were registered in a year.   Since 2000, anglers have failed to register less than 500 reds in only two years, as management measures for the sought after red fish preclude the keeping of the big adult fish all along the Atlantic. Powhatan Resort 258-5020 : Kelly Pratt reports bass fishing has slowed down a little caused by the weather, however the bass are biting spinner baits and buzz baits on the river flats, and Rattle Traps are producing on wood in the back of Yarmouth and Blackstump Creeks. Catfish continue to bite with fish up to 30 pounds being checked in. The most remarkable report is that customers are catching croaker, weighing up to 11/2 pounds, fishing off the pier right next to the tackle shop. (articles.dailypress.com)

I accidentally ran into a Bowfin hotbed, as I’m sure many others have. I’m an active responsibility sailor who grew up fishing the waters of South Texas. I recently finished an assignment at NAB Little Creek in Virginia Beach, VA. There’s a lake there, part of which is on the base and is called Lake Bradford and there’s a fence on one end that separates the off base part called Chubb Lake. Interestingly enough, it’s a freshwater lake that’s separated from the Chesapeake Bay by less than 100 yards. (bowfinanglers.com)
