Courtright Reservoir was fitted 1958 by Pacific Gas and Electric PG&E as a part of the Kings River Project that will include a system of lakes, tunnels, steel penstocks and powerhouses that divert water from the Kings River to produce electricity. In 1984, the Helms Pumped Storage Powerhouse was added which uses water flowing downhill from Courtright to Wishon Reservoir to produce electricity throughout peak demand times. At night, water is then pumped back uphill to Courtright to be used again throughout peak demand times. The Helms Powerhouse is distinctive because it was fitted a chamber carved out of hard granite a thousand feet underground at the north end of Wishon Lake. (fs.usda.gov)
As we approached Fleming Lake, the trail followed Fleming Creek which was maybe 100 feet below in a ravine. The bottom of the ravine was thickly covered with brush and trees. Down in the ravine we all obviously heard what sounded like a person or a big animal moving at a walking rate downstream reverse direction of us. It sounded like someone moving through thick brush and sometimes breaking branches, not trying to be calm. Afterward, my guide told me she thought it was a bear, since she had experience with them in this area before. To this day I don t have reason to think otherwise. (bfro.net)
Paddle Notes: through towering pine forests and the awesome giant redwood trees in the Mckinley Grove, little did I realize the sight that awaited me at Courtright Reservoir. Your 1st view of this mystical reservoir is of the strange dome-shaped rock formations, which create a surreal atmosphere possibly like you could imagine seeing in another world. Its soul-stirring beauty put it on my Top Twenty List of places to paddle in California. The reservoir is well hidden near the edge of the Sierra National Forest. Courtright Reervoir is abundant with wildlife and outdoor adventure opportunities. (paddlingcalifornia.com)
LAKE TAHOE-Fishing was tough for most guides over the weekend, with a early morning flurry followed by hours of dead water. On the north end of the lake, the fish are stacked up on the meter but unwilling to hit a tempt. Mickey Daniels at Big Mack Charters had a good bite at 4:30 to 5 a. M. At 100 feet, than did not catch fish till 8 or 9 o’clock when he was 350 to 400 feet deep. The Macks he caught ran from 3 to 9 pounds. Chuck Self at Chuck’s Charter Fishing had a tough time too with the fish coming for only 1 1/2 to 2 hours in the early morning, however ran 7 to 9 pounds. Mike Neilsen at South Shore had to jig Macks out of 170 to 220 feet of water with 3-oz Crippled Herring to salvage his last trip and landed six fish from 2 to 5 pounds. The water level is holding pretty steady. They re going to let more water out soon. It s about 55 full. They re catching lots of small bass up there now. Plastic worms are most likely number one. There s a good top water bait late in the evening anywhere there s rock. Most of those fish are running at about 12-14 inches. It s a pretty good bite, most likely the best bite we have in our area just for dumpers. You may be able to catch quite some fish when you go up there. Striper action has slowed down. It was pretty good for a while. Nearly all the stripers are coming from the river. (visaliatimesdelta.com)
CDFW was stocking rainbow and brown trout from other state hatcheries, as well as the American River Hatchery in Sacramento and Kern River Hatchery near Bakersfield, into state waters earlier than average. Many of they are catchable-size trout, also to some fingerlings and smaller fish. By rising planting frequency and the number of fish placed, CDFW can somewhat offshoot the natural decline in fishing opportunity as water temperatures in many geographic places become unsuitable. The accelerated planting schedule will continue till the end of summer when all the fish in the raceways are projected to be evacuated. (cdfgnews.wordpress.com)
It s like four different worlds out there. In Marin, all seven lakes are near full, however not kayaks are allowed on the water. In the East Bay, five lakes are in good form, with programs for boating and fishing flying high now. In Santa Clara County, only the small lakes have high water levels, and the big ones are low for the end of April. Then there’s the Peninsula, where it s Look, don t touch at all four lakes. Hesperia Lake continues to kick out excellent numbers of catfish for early morning anglers or for twilight and night anglers. There have been many limitations stated on fish averaging 3-0 with mackerel or the M&M combo marshmallow and meal worms the top baits. Best action on big fish continues to be for anglers able to make the long cast close to the island in the center of the lake. Art Haynes, Santa Ana, landed a bound of catfish exceeded by a 14-8 that was taken from the north shore on mealworms and marshmallows. Santa Ana River Lakes catfish action was. (Visit the website)

Any thoughts I had of rushing through Upper Goddard Canyon to try the mountain evaporated as early as I entered the bottom of the canyon. Here was a really special place, remote and beautiful. The canyon floor was carpeted with flowering lupine and lush green tundra, with pockets of krummholz and boulders disrupting the continuity of the meadows. Not since Bench Canyon in southern Yosemite had I seen such a place. Rushing through here could be akin to chugging a bottle of good wine; no, I have rushed through enough beautiful places in my lifetime in the name of mileage objectives and peaks to be bagged.
