PPL Holtwood Tailrace Update: After a 5-year closure caused by the Holtwood hydroelectric plant expansion, public fishing access to the dam s tailrace reopened on Monday, December 8. A new ADA compliant 42 long by 10 large fishing pier gets anglers closer to the action. Enhancements include a 16-space parking lot with three 3 handicapped parking spaces. Anglers can access the fishing pier on steps on the south side and a ramp access on the pier s north side. Fishermen have been enjoying excellent fishing for White Perch in the lower Susquehanna River this week by casting shad darts and have been also catching striped bass in the Susquehanna Flats area. After June first they’ll be able to fish for Striped Bass in the complete Susquehanna up to the Conowingo Dam; swim shads, crankbaits and bucktails dressed with a soft plastic rear will be cast in the channels and deeper pools. There have been lots of Striped Bass in the region so fishermen should have a great weekend. Fishing for channel catfish continues to be good in the Susquehanna and Elk Rivers. We did something totally different for this tournament. We had planned to fish this on Saturday. A couple of the boaters had family, ship and work issues occur which left 4 boats with 7 riders. So rather than have 3 people in a ship we decided to let those that could fish on Saturday fish on Saturday and those who could fish on Sunday fish on Sunday. Totally out out of the box for us but it worked. Sunday seemed to be the better day, no limitations were caught on Saturday. (thebasscollege.com)

Poplar Island came into see as we cleared the narrows and though it looked pretty foreboding as waves crashed on her windward shores. A different scene played in my mind as I thought of the times this past summer that we cast topwater lures to striped bass along the rocks and jigged white perch in places where swift tidal currents swept along submerged rocks on a calm summer morning or evening. Passing by Buoy 83 caused me to look to starboard and see Buoy 84 to the northeast and the channel edge that has made such good striped bass fishing for live liners in the past few years. As Bloody Point Light passed to starboard thoughts of that steep channel edge and spring trophy striped bass season filled my head; I could nearly hear reel drags screaming. (fishhound.com)

Sediment loads transported over the past 100 years in the Susquehanna River into the reservoirs have decreased from 8. 7 million tons per year in the early part of the 20th century to the current level of about 3. 5 million tons. The declines of sediment into the reservoirs since the 1950s are most probably related to introduction of soil conservation practices, land reverting back to forest, and better management of stockpiled coal piles.
