Chickahominy Reservoir Fishing Report

ODFW District staff sampled Como, Harriette, Echo and South Pass Lakes in the Mountain Lakes Wilderness this summer. Como Lake is the 1st lake encountered from the Varney Creek Trail and is a 5. 5 mile hike up a average incline. Best fishing appeared to be using spinners especially size two panther martins in black with gold blades. Six to 10-inch brook trout seemed common along the shoreline and are easily available by fly fisherman. Fish in all lakes were feeding on water boatmen/ back swimmers. Brook trout in Echo Lake were common and schools of four to five may be observed feeding. Some big rainbow trout mortalities were observed on the shoreline of Como and Harriette. (dfw.state.or.us)

Chickahominy Reservoir has an remaining trout fishery. Also to 28 chosen camp sites, camping and picnicking are allowed near the dam. This is a 1230-acre water supply reservoir located along the New Kent-Charles City county line. This impoundment of the Chickahominy River was finished in 1943 with the construction of a low-head dam recognized locally as Walkers Dam. A fish ladder constructed into the dam lets for the passage of anadromous fish like blueback herring and striped bass. The City of Newport News draws water from Chickahominy Lake and was accountable for the recent repairs and renovations to Walkers Dam. The Wood River is somewhat turbid caused by snowmelt at Crater Lake Park. Annie and Sun Creek are feeling high and turbid goes which enter the Wood River causing increased turbidity. Fishing rules have changed on Wood River to let for the harvest of two brown trout per day. All redband trout must be released unharmed. There’s no bound on brook trout. The Wood River is fished most effectively from ship as there’s little public property. Boats launched at Loosley, Fort Klamath or headwaters have to be low profile to get under bridges. Lonnie from Castaway 804-706-9100 reports catfish are biting well on the freshwater side. They’re biting on cut bait and eel. Crappie are starting to pick up and are caught on small and medium minnows. Brim are hit and miss, however many are catching them using crickets. On the saltwater side, everything has slowed, however stripers are the major target. Fake bait is the go-to. It s been slow, however it should pick back up as the conditions return to normal. I am planning a fishing trip this weekend on diascund reservoir. Anybody who has experienced fishing either Diascund reservoir or chickahominy, I could like to hear from youguys. Going to be fishing on diascund so any particular help with that lake could be appreciated or if you guys have any resources or another sites with info on diascund reservoir.
