Based on be a great month to sample the action. The only steelhead waters generally fishable in December are the bigger rivers with controlled releases from hydroelectric power stations, like the Niagara, Oswego, Salmon and Black rivers. In the early part of the month, most other tributaries will be ice-free or almost so. But once overnight readings fall steadily below freezing, small or slow-moving streams skim over. Longer warm spells or better still, a drenching rain can signal some number of days of thrilling fishing in those creeks. (gameandfishmag.com)
– In the lower Niagara River, salmon are available but that run has started to die down, being replaced by trout. For those aiming at salmon, ship drifters are using treated egg skein off three-way rigs in the Devil s Hole area. Shore casters are working the shoreline in the gorge off the NYPA fish platform; Whirlpool State Park or Devil s Hole State Park. Casting spoons, spinners or jigs will catch fish; so will egg sacks fished under a float. More trout are starting to show up so add in the Artpark shoreline as a good shore/ship choice. Some trout are being caught downriver. By trout, we mean steelhead/rainbows, browns or lake trout. (onthewater.com)
Orleans County: down temperatures and some recent rains have caused water levels and goes on all of the tributaries inside Orleans County to be at high levels, with visibility less than a foot usually. It also has caused most of the tributaries to clear the most of ice they have had. With precipitation in the form of both rain and snow, water levels should remain high. On Oak Orchard Creek, the turbines at the Waterport power station seemed to be running full bore, which means the turbine channel should contain most of the fish on the move. Steelhead should still be the most prevalent fish in any of the tributaries, followed by brown trout and we’re still to get reports of an sporadic coho being caught. (outdoornews.com)
– Modification to 5 trout daily bound on Cayuga and Owasco Lakes: keep present 5 trout joint daily bound for trout in Cayuga and Owasco Lakes but change maximum number of Lake Trout kept from 3 to 5 per day. Also change daily harvest bound for Rainbow and Brown Trout from 5 to 3 per day. Rationale: The more liberal daily bound on Lake Trout is meant to increase the harvest of Lake Trout and let for improved survival of other trout and salmon in Cayuga and Owasco Lakes. The reduced daily bound on Rainbow and Brown Trout is meant to alleviate some harvest pressure as the Department strives to increase their numbers in both lakes. (Click here for info)
In 2006, The SAREP/4H Youth Fly Fishing Program started reintroducing brook trout into Canadaway Creek after not having brook trout in its waters for over a hundred years. The efforts were 1st funded by sales of flies tied by the youth from the program and by donations but some years ago, the Brook Trout Reintroduction Program was funded by Doug Manly and Patagonia’s World Trout Fund. With the backing of the DEC’s electroshocking efforts and the Whispering Pines Hatchery, we have been able to refine our stocking practices to go with the hatchery’s cold water temperatures by distributing the fish near springs in the headwaters, by introducing the fish after fishing season and by buying older brook trout who were prepared to spawn as early as they entered the stream. Steelhead, which are a kind of rainbow trout, originated in the Pacific Northwest. Their presence in the Lake Erie region is the result of efforts by the NYSDEC and other groups to set up a big Great Lakes fishery through stocking steelhead in Lake Erie tributaries, 1st in the early 1950s and again in the 1980s. The steelhead population grew so quickly that outdoor writers quickly called the network of tributaries from Cleveland to Buffalo “Steelhead street. ”. (fredonia.edu)
Half the valley lies inside the 3, 000-acre, state-owned property called the Zoar Valley many Use Area see Dec. Ny. Gov/lands/36931. Html for details . I have find one blog that features the water that I use to steelhead fish back in western New York. The author looks to love the little Erie tributaries as much as I did. He’s some neat looking photos posted up there. I like to check in ever so frequently and reminisce. He seemed to have ended his season a little early this past Fall. I do not know if this was on account of the weather or numbers of fish. Most likely the weather. Anyway here is the GL’s blog site. (rogueriversalmonsteelheadboard.wordpress.com)

guideline for the continental United States, think of 30 inHg 1016 mb to be a normal level with 30. 5 inHg as an extreme high and 28. 5 inHg as an extreme low, because a higher or lower barometric pressure exerts more or less pressure in that order upon the surface of the water, the water pressure also changes in direct proprotion to the changes in the atmospheric pressure so, fish feel these changes in their swim bladder. Consequently, a fast rise or fall in the barometric pressure or an expanded period of either extreame high or extreme low barometric pressure can make a big difference in the quality of the fishing on any given day.
