As water temperatures decline, redfish have begun their yearly phenomenon of forming big schools. Schools of fifty redfish are common and the numbers will reach 100-150 in some cases in the depths of Winter. These fish do become a bit more cautious this time of year and fake lures can spook them. Instead of chasing the schools, we have been setting out as many as three lines with chunks of blue crab on #3/0 circle hooks. The redfish will smell this bait in the water and typically shortly order our rods are bending over with some ferocious hits. (charlestoncharterfishing.com)
Till recently there have not been a whole lot of nice weather days to target redfish in the Hilton Head area, however Capt. Dan Fishin’ Coach Utley 843-368-2126 says that when conditions have been good enough to get out the fishing was strong. Redfish are grouped up in their big wintertime schools, and on higher phases of the tide anglers can catch them up in the grass and in oyster beds in and around the grass. Using a mud minnow under a rattling cork has worked well, and casting 1/4 oz jigheads rigged with Gulp! Shrimp also has worked. If you move the jig it’ll get hung up, and so dead sticking it and waiting for a bite was the key. (dnr.sc.gov)
Yearly we anxiously await the coming of the fall, it’s really the best season in the South Carolina Lowcountry. the best inshore fishing is upon us as it cools down, however there is also Dove and Deer seasons, college football also as schools back in session. we’re very excited about this specific fall because we’re seeing lots of shrimp in the mudflats and creeks something that was quite missing the past couple years . that means that the shallow water redfish are to get fired up already and it’ll only get better as the temperatures cool down. While the fish are plenty catchable without good shrimp numbers, they do not do the really cool activity that makes for great sight fishing opportunities with fly rods and fake lures. IMPORTANT site changes coming. efficient March 1 only customers of the Angler s Headquarters tackle store will can access our fishing reports. Read more here. For a while there it looked like winter may never come this year, however cold temperatures in the center and latter part of January and into February brought water temperatures down to more common winter ranges. As of recently, the fishing has slowed across the board. The trout are around but they’re small and the redfish may be found in good numbers but they’re hard to get to eat. that’s unless you’re already catching the menhaden. And I’m. They arrived a couple of weeks ago but are now here in good enough numbers that you may nearly rely on them being in the normal spots. As long as the wind isn’t blowing out of the east, the bite should pick up this week after the cool front we are having. Lets keep our fingers crossed and our rod info at the prepared. With the passing of the Christmas Season, we can expect to see some number of different things while fishing this time of year. The main change will be big schools of Redfish on shallow flats. With the prolonged warmer weather they are all a little late coming together now, however they are there! Like I mentioned before, these schools can vary from 50-500 Redfish in one school. These fish hold shallower flats where the water is warmer. With that being said, when it all comes together, it can create the perfect day of fishing! Beyond the Redfishing, we’ll also be aiming at Sheepshead holding structure inshore. (charlestonfishingadventures.com)
Bottom fishing continues to be productive with limitations of big black bass and vermilion snapper being caught fast. Big trigger fish are plentiful in 100′ of water. We’re also catching big red snapper, but they are catch and release only. More out in the gulf stream the dolphin bite is starting to pick up with the wahoo also. Trolling with balleyhoo along temperature breaks is the key. (charlestonfishingexperience.com)
There is something inside every fisherman, particularly a sight-fisherman, that gets really excited by being able to see to the bottom. The colorful sea grass, the big mullet schools, discarded crab traps and human junk, sandy contours and pot-holes, and sometimes…a redfish or two. Its winter time in our estuaries and the water is very clear – you may be able to see it all now! I have been taking benefit of all this clear water to attempt out my GoPro camera. Most people use it for video, however the photography capability was pretty remarkable – plus I can take underwater shots. (winyahguide.com)
I ve had some free time to scout for the reds the past few weeks and found some nice ones. Hitting the docks on an outgoing tide has seemed to work really well in spite of some cold days here and there. I ve found some nice schools of fish on docks 20-30 fish per dock and the flats 30-100+ per flat . in general, weather this winter was very light and the fish are really biting! Fishing Charters with 8-10 reds in an hour aren’t unusual and we can typically hit some honey holes in a 3-4 hour trip. (avidangling.com)
