Chandeleur Islands Fishing Reports

We fish around Redfish Point, Monkey Bayou and New Harbor because we have protected waters that let us to launch our 15-foot skiffs in the water without having to fight rough seas, said Capt. George Pelaez of the Joka’s Wild, who takes up to 12 people twice a week out to the Chandeleurs to fish for 2 days. Most of the time, our anglers will be fishing in 2- to 5-foot-deep water over grass flats. Throughout your time at Chandeleur Island your home base will be the Pelican, a floating fish camp that gives the only full-time adjustments in the islands.   The Pelican was operating in Schooner Harbor at the Chandeleurs since 1985.   throughout that time it is been continually improved for comfort and convenience.   After a hard day of fishing you may be able to have a hot shower and relax in the air conditioned bunk house or the galley.   Or you may want to enjoy a cool drink and the breeze inside the screen porch.  If you are already thinking about the next morning’s fishing, you may be able to scout out the islands from rooftop deck, then enjoy the colorful sunset over the flats to the west. It was not long before rod holders were set up on this shell covered beach, and baits were readied. I had brought along 5 big amberjack to over #50 from Texas, and one accompanied us to the beach this day. Kip and Curtis set up their gear a bit north of Repo and I. I watched Repo wander up the beach casting a spoon while I rigged up. Next thing I know I see his rod bent over. He brings back a nice cownose ray that could join our party as new bait! Caught on a spoon! I quickly ran three baits via kayak and was rigging a 4th when Curtis comes back from a bait run at the pass. Bait was scarce, however he had scored some hardheads and whiting. Chris was all up for the drive as we rondevu at his house at 9pm. We had to be there the next morning to load up and, yes we were driving straight through and yes, I am too old to do that. As we filled I wonder how we could kill the time on the drive up. Four guys with all the gear and a 10 hour drive. It do not sound like much fun but some how we got through it. Talks of fishing, more fishing, the meaning life, and religion debate passed the time. Nine and half hours afterward we were driving into Biloxi, MS to meet up with the mother ship ship. Though you could use up a lifetime learning how to fish all the miles and miles of beaches the five barrier islands have to offer, here are some key regions you may be able to target to get you on the right track. On Petit Bois Island, fish the isle’s east end, both on the surf side and on the inside flats and grassbeds down to the lagoon entrance.
